After multiple delays, Payday 3 finally arrives this month, but if you just can’t wait to get your hands on the game, a free open beta is being held this weekend. The Payday 3 Technical Open Beta won’t require you to have pre-ordered the game – anybody on Steam or Xbox Series X/S can jump in (PS5 is excluded for whatever reason). Starbreeze does warn the beta build is from a few months back, so it doesn’t necessarily represent the final state of the game – the beta is more about testing the capacity of the Payday 3 servers.
The Payday 3 open beta will offer similar content to the recent closed beta – a single heist, the original four heist-ers, and most of the game’s weapons and cosmetics. Progress will not carry over to the full game. Here’s a bit more detail on what the beta includes.
The Payday 3 Technical Open Beta will run from Friday (September 8) to Monday (September 11). Haven’t been keeping up with Payday 3? Here’s the game’s basic setup…
“The legendary Payday Crew, dreaded by the law and underworld alike, is back. Ripped from their peaceful retirement to rejoin the criminal world by a new threat, one born from the chaos the Crew left in their wake. In order to identify and crush this new threat, the Crew is leaving their Washington DC roots behind them and moving to New York City. A new location will bring with it new challenges, but also new opportunities for a heister with a plan.”
Payday 3 launches on PC (via both Steam and the Epic Games Store), Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 on September 21. The game will be available via Xbox Game Pass on Day 1.

From the city street shootouts of Heat to the creepy clown masks found in The Dark Knight’s opening moments, there’s something alarmingly alluring about the Hollywood bank heist fantasy. Fortunately, the excellent Payday series has been letting me live it out for more than a decade without needing to establish a rap sheet of my own. The next chapter in this long-running burglary simulator, Payday 3, recently concluded its open beta before we all get to filch the final version later this month – and though this early look was only a limited snapshot of what’s to come, it already feels like a significant step up from the lawbreaking of Payday 2. After twelve hours of smashing and grabbing, I’ve got a whole lot more left to see in the full game, but so far I’m very excited to come out of retirement and continue my life of crime.
