During the Sony State of Play, Square Enix announced its Splatoon-like multiplayer shooter Foamstars will host an open beta test at the end of this month, starting September 29.
The online paint war kicks off its Open Beta Party with two game modes, both pitting players against each other in chaotic arenas with teams of varying sizes. The Foamstars test run launches with two game modes, Smash the Star and Happy Bath Survival.
As for dates, Square Enix included a Foamstars open beta schedule adjusted based on timezone.
In Smash the Star, you’ll compete in a team deathmatch mode where the rules change as challengers are knocked out. Happy Bath Survival — what a name —whittles teams away into a last-team-standing affair.
If you choose to go all in earlier, your progress in the Foamstars open beta won’t carry over to the game’s full release. It’s also only available for folks on PlayStation 5, though the multiplayer shooter will launch for the PS4, also.
Today’s State of Play ushered in a handful of new announcements, like a demo for Ghostrunner 2 out today and a look at Sony’s new PlayStation controller offerings. However, Square Enix still stole the show with its update on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, showing off brand-new footage and a fancy collector’s edition featuring the series’ best-conditioned baddie, Sephiroth.

You can play the Happy Bath Survival and Smash the Star modes from now until 11:59pm PDT on Sunday, with eight characters up for selection. Your progress won't carry over into the full version, and while there will be a PS4 edition available at launch, this open beta isn't available on Sony's last-gen system.

NVIDIA has announced that its latest DLSS version 3.5 will be launching on September 21. It had previously revealed that DLSS 3.5 will, in fact, be compatible with all RTX cards to help provide a boost to titles including the updated Cyberpunk 2077. This includes Ray Reconstruction to help provide an even more beautiful and realistic experience for titles that support it. New AI-powered techniques will make their way to tensor cores across the board for NVIDIA RTX cards with the highlight being Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 at release. Ray Reconstruction will replace hand-tuned denoisers, which resolve sampled rays with a NVIDIA supercomputer-trained artificial intelligence network that will generate higher-quality pixels between sampled rays.

In case you missed the memo, Marvel's Avengers is leaving storefronts at the end of September. Square Enix's live service-centred superhero action game will be no more after about three years on the market, leaving PS Store on 30th September 2023 (though you can still play it after this date). However, as spotted by GamesRadar, you can at least check the game out in its final weeks on sale for a seriously reduced price.

Yes, Foamstars is happening, and all jokes aside, it was pretty fun when we went hands on earlier this year. Soon, a lot more people will get the chance to check it out, as an open beta test is heading our way very soon.
