The immersive 2016 stealth shooter Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is currently available for free on the Epic Games Store. Continuing the story of Adam Jensen, a man equipped with mechanical cybernetic implants called augmentations, the title is known to many as one of Eidos-Montreal‘s best games.

Arkane Austin is officially no more, and Studio Director Harvey Smith, who has worked at Arkane for over sixteen years, shared all his emotions in a long and heartfelt thread on Twitter/X. Over the course of his 30-plus-year-long career in the industry, Smith was a lead designer at Ion Storm on Deus Ex, a director on Deus Ex: Invisible War, and a designer on Thief: Deadly Shadows. After a brief stint at Midway, he joined Arkane to be a creative director, designer, and writer on the first Dishonored.

Following a report by Game Developer on the ESA’s refusal to budge during a hearing on easing copyright restrictions around academia’s remote access to legacy games, Deus Ex creator Warren Spector has written for the website on his own frustrations with, and efforts to aid, game preservation. Channeling some of the classic immersive sim resourcefulness he helped pioneer, he writes that he’s “literally dumpster dived to retrieve information other developers have simply thrown away, believing it to be worthless.”

In the latest step in its restructuring initiative, Embracer Group has announced that it will be splitting into three different companies. Embracer is a Swedish video game and media conglomerate that got its start in 2011 as Nordic Games Licensing, taking over the intellectual properties of defunct publishers like JoWooD and THQ. In the years since, the company has grown into a major presence in the video games space.

The Epic Games Store is giving away the acclaimed sci-fi title as part of its free weekly giveaway on March 14, 2024. As is the case with every giveaway, the game will be completely free through the Epic Games Store until 11:00 AM ET on the following Thursday, March 21, 2024, when another free game will become available instead.

From March 14 to March 21, Epic Games Store users will have the chance to claim Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and The Bridge for their digital libraries. Epic Games Store users are treated to new free games on a weekly basis, though the quantity of free games tends to differ. Sometimes, Epic Games Store users get two free games per week, like what's happening next Thursday, but other times, EGS users are only treated to one free game.

Macs have always been hit-or-miss when it comes to gaming. Recently, Eilas Toufexis, the voice behind Adam Jensen from the later Deus Ex games, posted a heartfelt goodbye to the character he’s best known for. With hopes of a new entry fading fast, the actor has since said he’s been asked to ease up when talking about the Mankind Divided and Human Revolution protagonist.

Toufexis also shared a few parting speculations about the unannounced Deus Ex sequel from Eidos Montreal that was reported cancelled last week. Toufexis wasn't involved with this one, and according to him, it likely wasn't a continuation of Jensen's story from Mankind Divided.

Black Forest Games, a German video game developer subsidiary of THQ Nordic, which Embracer Group owns, is reportedly planning to lay off around 50% of its employees. Last December, two Danish developers owned by Embracer Group, 3D Realms and Slipgate Ironworks, announced that over half of their staff would have their roles eliminated. With that announcement, around 1000 people were laid off by Embracer in the second half of 2023. Now, Black Forest Games is seemingly the latest developer to be affected.

I’m not sure how I’ve survived so long in a business that more typically burns people out in... somewhat less, let’s just say. That said, I have some thoughts about survival and an urge to tell the story of how I today find myself one of the most long-lived veterans still actively involved in making games. For my money, The Nameless Mod (TNM) is one of the best Deus Ex experiences out there. It's a lengthy total conversion mod for the original Deus Ex that transplants the original masterpiece's immersive sim brilliance into a tale set in a Deus Ex fan forum, and it's much, much better than that pitch makes it sound. Richard Cobbett called it «one of the best things to come from Deus Ex, and one of the best single-player mods in general,» in his Crapshoot of the mod, and it just received a huge update 14 years after its original release.

Now that Activision has finished their official reveal for Call of Duty Modern Warfare III, we now know what fans were excited about, even if the rest of the world wasn’t fully aware of what the game was.
