The long-anticipated sequel by Larian Studios has captivated fans by giving them the ability to do just about anything in a fantasy world, allowing them to explore the entire spectrum of morality alongside a brilliant cast of characters. The title has received eight nominations this year at The Game Awards, including Game of the Year.

Just as they received the Game of the Year prize at the GDC Awards in San Francisco, the developers of Baldur's Gate 3 announced through Larian CEO Swen Vincke that they wouldn't continue to make a sequel or even DLCs for the acclaimed cRPG.

Last month, Larian Studios broke the hearts of every Baldur's Gate fan across the globe by announcing that they have no plans to work with the Dungeons & Dragons license moving forward, and that the studio will instead move onto something new rather than stick around and make Baldur's Gate 4. It was a hammer blow to the hopes and dreams of everyone that fell in love with the characters that Larian created, but it doesn't mean that they're gone forever.

I recently sat down for an interview with Amelia Tyler, the voice of Baldur's Gate 3's many, many lines of narration. We talked about the Dark Urge, her favourite lines, and scaring the crap out of carers at an old people's home (hypothetically). But we also spoke about mental health, a subject Tyler's very transparent about.

I chatted to Amelia Tyler earlier this week. In case you're unfamiliar, Tyler's the voice of Baldur's Gate 3's narrator, but she's also a huge nerd and a seasoned roleplayer. While we talked about her favourite voice lines—as well as playing the Dark Urge's inner monologue—the conversation inevitably shifted towards pen & paper.

As part of her role as the narrator of Baldur's Gate, Tyler says that she and the team created all of these different tones and variations on the lines spoken in the narration to reflect all of the playable characters, better suiting the internal monologue that tells their particular story.

Voice and motion capture actor Neil Newbon, known to fans of Baldur's Gate 3 as Astarion, is streaming a co-op let's play of Baldur's Gate 3 alongside friend and horror writer-director Tom de Ville. As they stream they laugh along to the game, and yeah, Newbon does The Astarion Voice a lot when he's in control of, you know, the character he played in the game.

As someone who used to watch the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon before school every morning, I was delighted to see the first animated short for Baldur's Gate 3, which aired as part of the PC Gaming Show 2023 back in June. Now it's got a sequel of sorts. Mashed, the premiere source of videogame parody cartoons, has made a new video starring the intrepid heroes of Baldur's Gate 3.

We asked Amelia Tyler who her favourite character is in Baldur's Gate 3, and while she couldn't land on a definitive favourite after having spent so long in their heads during her time as the game's narrator, she did say that her romance pick would go to Karlach, the fierce barbarian tiefling.

Baldur's Gate 3 does all it can to capture the feeling of playing Dungeons & Dragons, and much of that is thanks to its narration. Whatever choice you make, Amelia Tyler's voice is there to guide you through every nat 20 and critical failure. And while there's a lot of emotion in her voice, she's - for the most part - a fairly neutral onlooker. Aside from a few instances, of course.

Baldur's Gate 3 features some fantastic companion characters, all wonderfully voiced throughout the game. It really adds to its immersion.

Of course, there’s the recently revealed hot villainess that had an entire corner of the internet making the same joke: “I can fix her.” There’s the fact that you can seduce a druid who’s in bear form - as in an actual bear, not the gay slang version of the word. Baldur’s Gate 3 is, in a lot of ways, going to be a very silly game. You can talk to territorial squirrels, throw your shoes at an annoying child, and do just about anything your D&D-loving heart desires in Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian’s new RPG game. All of this, from picking your Baldur’s Gate 3 classes to diving into the story, will be scored by a narrator, and we now know what it would sound like if they just went off kilter for the Baldur’s Gate 3 release date, and it’s as brilliant as you’d expect.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a wildly complex game, but the humble narrator helps guide players through it all. Whether I’m in a dingy goblin village or peering into a pool of mind flayer tadpoles, I know the narrator will dispassionately explain the finer details to me. It helps that the voice actress does such a good job at being cool, clear, and slightly mysterious. The mystique is only slightly broken by an incredible series of TikToks posted over the last couple of months by narrator actress Amelia Tyler.

Amelia Tyler—who you might also recognise as the voice of Malady from Divinity: Original Sin 2—has graced us with another batch of hilarious voice bloopers this week. She has the mammoth task of voicing the narrator of Baldur's Gate 3 which, considering how big the game's gonna be, seems like both a privilege and some form of divine punishment.
