While astrological accuracy is undoubtedly something the game has achieved by correctly naming solar systems and planets after natural systems in the known galaxy, not everyone is an astronomer. This lack of decent labeling can make navigating to even the most well-known locations a hassle without the aid of auto-navigation on the mission screen.

has a vast multitude of companions that space adventurers can meet and recruit to their group. While some have deep and emotional storylines, others have funny personalities or are cool to have around. However, outside the core four Constellation members of Sam Coe, Sarah Morgan, Barrett, and Andreja, the game's other potential ship crew candidates don't get the love they deserve. So far, space adventurers have found a total of 27 different recruitable companions in .

It’s easy to get lost in the massive world of , but there are some important locations every player should know. Discovery is a significant aspect of the gameplay loop, which leads to some excellent moments. However, this means that some may not find particular locations that could have been of great value at an earlier point in their playthrough. It can also be overwhelming to keep track of the enormous number of points of interest in the game, which is further complicated by the lack of a legend and filter tool on the star map.

has a variety of side quests that provide you with every choice you could think of, but few are as tense as the ones seen in a mission where your decisions could lead to grave outcomes. You might find this mission early in your journey, with a series of objectives that test your character's morality. Adhesive is a common resource in Starfield, and you are going to need a lot of it if you engage with the game’s crafting systems and make yourself some great modded weapons and things for your outpost. Thankfully, there are lots of ways to get your hands on this stuff, although some are more efficient than others.

Your quest for the Artifacts in will eventually lead to the mission, which takes you to multiple planets and a mysterious star station known only as The Eye. Featuring battles with deadly mercenaries and plenty of exploration across the galaxy, there are many objectives to pursue. However, there are some difficulties that can make this quest far more challenging than you might expect.

Bethesda Game Studios is not necessarily well regarded for its expertise at digital gunplay, but after Starfield, that very well may change. Numerous critics, including here at Polygon, have praised its combat. Personally, I’ve found that its weapons feel weighty, fairly precise, and satisfyingly potent. It’s a big improvement from the Fallout series’ collection of feathery pop-guns.

While there are many different crafting components to find, buy and use in Starfield, none is quite so vital – perhaps – as adhesive.

Making money, or credits, in Starfield can take a lot of time if you don't take advantage of some of Starfield's more disreputable activities. The easiest of these is finding and selling contraband. As far as we've seen possession of these yellow-marked items has no impact on companion relationships, and unless it's a UC or Freestar Collective scanner, no one really cares if you have it.

Starfield features a huge selection of weapons that allows you to fight the many enemies you encounter on your search for the Artifacts in a lot of different ways. The selection also includes melee weapons that may not be particularly flashy but that can still deal a lot of damage with the right build.

Starfield will be released worldwide on September 6th, but it’s had hundreds of thousands of players courtesy of early access. Many are already having fun traversing the universe and its +1000 planets. However, not all have heaps of content, which matches director Todd Howard’s statement that only 10 percent have life on them.

We've just given Baldur's Gate 3 one of the highest review scores ever awarded in PC Gamer's 30 year history, putting it in the company of just a handful of other games, including Half-Life 2 and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. With just a few weeks left, everyone and their dog is talking about Starfield (if “woof” is canine-speak for “I’m really looking forward to Starfield“). Before then, we’re still being drip-fed bite-sized bits of information, including the story prior to the game itself.

Bethesda have published a timeline detailing events in the Starfield universe from before the player's arrival. The scrollable chronology, which runs from 2050 to 2160, charts the origins of the war between the United Colonies and Freestar Collective factions, who sound more and more to me like the Union and the Confederacy in the US Civil War. We're also told about the formation of the Constellation organisation, a group of swashbuckling pioneers who are concerned with the origins of certain mystic Artifacts. And we get to read a little about a few key Starfield characters, such as space cowboy Sam Coe, careworn ex-soldier Sarah Morgan and sciencehunk Barrett. But the timeline also leaves plenty of mysteries. Join me, as I make a show of poking around in the collapsing space-museum with my tricorder.

Starfield is less than a month away and the drip-feed of information about the space RPG continues: Bethesda has published a timeline of events leading from the fictional colonization of Mars in 2050 to the beginning of the game in 2330.

Starfield is going to be big. Bigger than anything we've seen from Bethesda. While in the past, we've explored singular continents or real-life regions in The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, its newest RPG will take us across the stars to 1,000 planets across 100 star systems. And in anticipation of its launch, fans have eagerly begun to piece together the galaxy to make sense of its gargantuan scale.
