Odd Pieces: Beyond the Kelp Review

When it comes to video games, it's Samurai season. Medieval Japan is no stranger to the medium; From Okami and Onimusha to Tenchu and Total War, the setting has been explored in poetic and punchy ways before. But a few popular recent games have brought renewed interest in sword saints and shinobis. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice established the ethos of a modern action game set in Japan's tumultuous past, and Ghost of Tsushima refined the open-world, action-adventure genre for a Samurai story.

We review The Gardens, a cozy tile laying game published by Grail Games. The Gardens is a set collection game that will have you creating the Sydney Botanical Gardens.

Helldivers 2 announced over the weekend that players would soon have to link their Steam accounts to PSN to continue playing, a move that drew so much backlash that Sony completely walked back the announcement mere days later. However, it wasn't quick enough to stop a review bomb that tanked the game's overall score.

Combat in is quite different from other RPG titles, with strong effects and attacks being tied to a United state that you can put your retinue in. However, this strategic maneuver can only be done when you masterfully manipulate the timeline of a battle. Those who pull off a United attack or effect can deal incredible damage or impose status conditions that increase their chances of victory.

Historically, Sea of Thieves and I go way back. I played a few hundred hours of Sea of Thieves up until when the Pirates of the Caribbean update came out. I quit because I felt like 80% of what I did was a waste of time. I did soldier through, mostly because I played the game with my family. Unfortunately, after we had to cut a lengthy adventure short for the Pirates of the Caribbean story and lost a few hours of progress, we all hung it up, and I uninstalled the game.

Guardian Tactics: Deck of the Chosen is an upcoming roguelike deck builder from the creators of Timelie, Urnique Studio. It functions a bit differently from what you might be used to from roguelikes. As of March 29th, Urnique Studio has released the demo for Guardian Tactics, and I got the chance to check it out. Digital Sun’s previous outings, The Mageseeker and Moonlighter, were both fun games, but Moonlighter delighted me not only with its quality, but also its unusual genre combination. In this, Cataclismo is shaping up to be quite the worthy successor. While Moonlighter was half classic Legend of Zelda and half shopkeep simulator, Cataclismo is half tower defense and half base-building real-time strategy (with base-building inspired by LEGO). It’s also loads of fun, based on the hours I’ve already spent playing it. If the studio nails the landing with the full release, I’ll be spending far more time in its eerily charming world.

For all long as the Fallout franchise has been around, it has never been set outside of the United States. Of course, its over-the-top, retro-futuristic Americana satirization is a core aspect of what makes Fallout, Fallout, but on new few occasions, large chunks of the series’ fanbase have wondered how locations outside of the US are faring in Fallout’s post-apocalyptic setting, and whether they could fare as suitable settings for a future Fallout game.

For years Fallout fans have wondered if a video game in the franchise will ever leave the United States for another country. According to Fallout lore, the nuclear war of 2077 upon which the franchise is based was not localized to the U.S., but a global event. And so, the idea of traipsing astound post-apocalyptic London or even Canada has long-been mooted by fans.

It's been a fascinating journey for the developers behind indie game studio Evening Star. Much of the crew got their humble starts working together on Sonic the Hedgehog fan games. Their work was so highly regarded that they would eventually be recruited by Sega to develop Sonic Mania, a throwback to the franchise's 2D heyday that would go on to become the highest rated Sonic game in over 25 years.

Bethesda Games Studios are thinking about how they can release games more frequently while still ensuring that they have a healthy audience for years, the Elder Scrolls company's king wizard Todd Howard has remarked in an interview with Kinda Funny, from which Alice B has already scientifically extracted some titbits about forthcoming Starfield expansion Shattered Space.

PS Plus Extra subscribers hoping to download the Fallout 4 free current-gen update have been left disappointed, after finding that the upgraded version hasn't been applied to the subscription service. Instead, those who have downloaded the game from the PS Plus game catalog are stuck with the previous-gen version.
