Guardian Tactics: Deck of the Chosen is an upcoming roguelike deck builder from the creators of Timelie, Urnique Studio. It functions a bit differently from what you might be used to from roguelikes. As of March 29th, Urnique Studio has released the demo for Guardian Tactics, and I got the chance to check it out. If you are ready for a decent challenge, let me tell you about Guardian Tactics: Deck of the Chosen.
In Guardian Tactics, you command a team of guardians to protect your village from an android invasion. I was able to experience the battle system in the game. When leaving the town, the battles happen in waves, with the objective of each wave being to beat a certain number of enemies. If a guardian dies at any point during the battle, that’s game over. At least in the demo, that meant restarting from wave one or returning to the main menu.
One key to strategizing is understanding each guardian's unique trait. I found this aspect fun as it made positioning your guardians important. Falconia, the bird guardian, has the ability to attack the furthest enemy when it’s moved. On the other hand, Falkor, the dragon guardian gets a strength boost when it is moved forward. Utilizing these traits effectively can help take down enemies and mitigate damage.
With that said, having a good hand is also helpful. However, when I had to discard the hand each time, the RNG hand drawing in the next turn pulled many a fast one on me. This is not a downside but part of the fun as each turn, there needs to be a new strategy. The discarding hand has both saved me and screwed me over in kind. At one point, the latest hand provided me with the shields I needed to mitigate damage and keep my guardians alive. On another turn, it gave me attack cards for Falconia and Cameliott, the shield lizard. Both cards moved each guardian's position and did not deal enough damage to take out any androids. No matter what, with each guardian being low, one of the guardians would get hit and die.
While playing Guardian Tactics, at least with this set of guardians, the main strategy is to mitigate damage. None of their attack cards damage enough to take out enemies quickly enough. By wave two, android spiders get added to waves, which ups the difficulty. It has a bind attack where it starts at three stacks and deals damage proportionate to the amount of stacks. The only way to avoid that damage is to move whichever guardian is bound enough times to break the stacks or beat the spider. With the spider having seven health, it’s often impossible to beat it unless you get a good hand the turn you need.At the end of each wave,Tactics rewarded me with adding a new card to the deck

It's happening again. A small indie developer comes out of nowhere and has everyone flipping their lid over some revolutionary new game, and you can buy it for half the price of a traditional AAA game. Except this time, there isn't some post-launch slow burn as super-streamer after super-streamer gets their chat cults all riled up. Nope, this go-around, medieval city builder Manor Lordsarrived at its Early Access launch with a wishlist army over three million strong, reaching 170,000+ concurrent players on Steam multiple times during launch weekend. But with many of its features still unfinished, Manor Lords may be just a flash in the pan, at least for now.
The official release date trailer of Athenian Rhapsody, uploaded on YouTube, is a hilarious farce. It centers on our wide-eyed hero, who discovers that Athenian Rhapsody is about to launch after a dubious snack while out on a nature stroll! A creepy-smiled mushroom who can’t wait to reveal the release date but ends up clogging the toilet instead.
Digital Sun’s previous outings, The Mageseeker and Moonlighter, were both fun games, but Moonlighter delighted me not only with its quality, but also its unusual genre combination. In this, Cataclismo is shaping up to be quite the worthy successor. While Moonlighter was half classic Legend of Zelda and half shopkeep simulator, Cataclismo is half tower defense and half base-building real-time strategy (with base-building inspired by LEGO). It’s also loads of fun, based on the hours I’ve already spent playing it. If the studio nails the landing with the full release, I’ll be spending far more time in its eerily charming world.

It's been a fascinating journey for the developers behind indie game studio Evening Star. Much of the crew got their humble starts working together on Sonic the Hedgehog fan games. Their work was so highly regarded that they would eventually be recruited by Sega to develop Sonic Mania, a throwback to the franchise's 2D heyday that would go on to become the highest rated Sonic game in over 25 years.
might not look like a game that would have much of an emphasis on the story at first glance, but by the time it reaches the ending, it proves that its narrative ambitions are greater than might be expected. As an unusual twist on the soulslike genre, packs intense fights and a healthy dose of platforming into a package that's more charming than most of its peers. Although the framing might seem like it wouldn't dwell in the grim, quiet corners that most soulslike games frequent, the story ends up having some serious weight.
The Consortium is an optional boss in , and fighting this gaggle of sea creatures trapped in a crab pot isn't everyone's idea of a good time; however, if you are into crustacean-powered combat, this extra boss is a great way to earn more microplastics and umami crystals. While the fight is a bit more complicated than the combat showcased in the gameplay preview in 2022, this boss fight is unique that players will not soon forget.
