It seems as though Dave the Diver is a big hit with those subscribed to the Extra tier of PlayStation Plus. The Extra tier of PlayStation Plus gives subscribers access to everything that comes with the Essential tier, like the monthly free games, as well as a huge rotating library of select PS4 and PS5 titles, ala Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation now. For the most part, the new PS Plus Extra games are comprised of older titles, but there are times when new games debut on the service.
In fact, April 2024 saw two games make their PlayStation debuts as part of PS Plus Extra. One game was Metroidvania Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, which was added to PS Plus Extra on April 23. The other was Dave the Diver, a game that first released in 2023 for PC and Switch, but has now finally joined the PlayStation family. As of the April 2024 update, PS Plus Extra subscribers are able to play the critically-acclaimed Dave the Diver in its entirety through their PS Plus Extra subscription.
It seems as though many PS Plus Extra subscribers are taking the time to try Dave the Diver for themselves. A report by True Trophies and GameInsights has indicated that Dave the Diver is, to date, the third-most popular PS Plus Extra game addition of all time, right behind Stray and Grand Theft Auto 5. The two other games in the top five are Sea of Stars and Horizon Forbidden West. Considering how big Sea of Stars and Horizon Forbidden West were, it's impressive to see Dave the Diver rank so high.
Dave the Diver earned rave reviews last year, and managed to take home multiple awards. Its availability through the PS Plus Extra library seems to have successfully expanded the game's audience, and so many PlayStation gamers are now getting to see what the fuss is about. Dave the Diver expanding to PlayStation means that the game is available on almost all major platforms, though Xbox fans are still waiting for news of a port for their console of choice.
In the meantime, it will be interesting to see if Stray ever loses its spot as the most popular PS Plus Extra game. Stray was one of the first day one games released on PS Plus Extra. It lets players play as a cat, and that, combined with the high review scores it earned, clearly helped it become the most popular PS Plus Extra game to date. It's possible an even bigger day one PS Plus Extra game will come through the pipeline at some point, but for now, Stray remains at the top of the mountain.
Dave the Diver puts players into the shoes of a deep-sea diver whose in charge of a sushi restaurant.

Unfortunately for PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers, it seems an additional seven games are leaving the service, bringing the total to a whopping 34 games that are on their way out. PlayStation Plus Extra games are removed on a monthly basis, but 34 is still a lot of games to see go removed all at one time. All 34 games are expected to be removed from the PlayStation Plus Extra tier on Tuesday, May 21.
The newly-released Nintendo Switch exclusive scuba diving adventure game Endless Ocean: Luminous has earned mixed reviews from critics, making it one of the lower-rated Nintendo-published games in some time. Switch game Endless Ocean: Luminous is the third Endless Ocean game developed by Akira, with the first one releasing as a Wii exclusive in 2007, followed by a sequel in 2009.
Although the impending departure of from PlayStation Plus is unwelcome news for subscribers, there might be a silver lining for more general fans of the series. Originally released for the PS4 in 2017, very quickly became one of the most popular games on the console, enough that it later received a sequel,, and was ported to PC in 2020. Later on, the game would become part of Sony's ongoing subscription service, PS Plus, allowing more PlayStation owners to play it at a reduced cost.
