One of the biggest questions of Square Enix’s “remake saga” with Cloud and friends was, “how much are they going to change things?” At first, it seemed like the changes would merely be cosmetic in the gameplay space. After all, the company had moved past turn-based combat for their mainline titles, and the remake took that and ran with it in a good way. But as players actually went through the title, they noticed not just a focus on the Midgar saga but fleshed-out characters and big changes. All this makes Final Fantasy VII Rebirth even more anticipated because of the changes that could come.
In the second game of the remake saga, Cloud and the others will head out into the open world of Gaia in an attempt to find Sephiroth and stop him for good. But that’s not what fans are focusing on right now. Instead, they’re focusing on the fact that the game has been confirmed to “end” at a key moment in The Forgotten Capital. Longtime RPG fans know that this is where Sephiroth shockingly killed Aerith in the original title. But in an interview, director Naoki Hamaguchi teased that there was a “big surprise” awaiting fans once they got there.
Indonesian gaming website Gamebrott has a new interview with FF7 Rebirth Director Hamaguchi where they ask about Aerith's fate at the Forgotten Capital.
Hamaguchi says regarding "that" scene, he can confirm they have a "big surprise" planned and to please look forward to it… pic.twitter.com/DfZ0vc7lc1
Specifically, he said:
“So, to that question and to all the gamers regarding the “you-know-what” moment, we can confirm that we will give you a “big surprise.” So you can look forward to that later in the game.”
It’s very obvious that he’s not just talking about Aerith’s potential death but the fact that the game will likely “undo” the death so that it doesn’t happen this time around. While that may seem odd, the original remake title made it clear that changes to the lore can happen if certain events come to pass, such as when Sephiroth defeated the Time Wraiths himself so that they didn’t affect him.
But the question becomes, “Will Aerith living be the only surprise?” After all, there almost always needs to be a sacrifice in games like these. So, who could be the one to take Aerith’s place if she’s not the one to die?
The answer might be another tease that Hamaguchi made, as he noted that Zack Fair would have a big role to play in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. We know that he’s alive in this new timeline and that he’s looking for Aerith. So he may sacrifice himself so that she can live.
We’ll find out when the game arrives on February 29th.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will continue the FFVII remake trilogy with a more open world-like design. To that end, Naoki Hamaguchi, one of the game's directors, admitted he took inspiration from Western games like CD Projekt RED's The Witcher and Guerrilla Games' Horizon.
The Marvels director Nia DaCosta found an interesting source of inspiration when pitching the film to Marvel: the computer animated film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.
One of the key writers in the Final Fantasy series has asked fans to stop demanding that he kill off characters they don’t like.
Nobody better lay a finger on Cloud's Butterfinger...or is it Zack's?

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has confirmed in a recent interview that there's a "big surprise" planned for the original game's most iconic death scene. You know the one.
The anticipation for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth grows with every week that goes by and every piece of news that gets put out for it. In the game, we’ll finally get to set foot outside of Midgar and see the world of Gaia for the most part. Square Enix has already highlighted certain cities and areas we’ll visit, including the final “fateful” location that will end the game. But there are still many mysteries surrounding the title that we won’t get answered until we play it. For example, there’s the issue with Zack Fair and his role in the remake saga.
Watch out for falling Sephiroths before praying to the planet.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's director, Naoki Hamaguchi, says there's a "big surprise" planned for the original JRPG's most iconic twist, and it's far from the first time fans – myself included – have been given reason to sweat over what's to come.
Another classicly-styled horror game indie game joins the genre’s ranks today with the announcement of SFB Games’ “Crow Country.” Like other relatively recent horror titles such as Signalis and Tormented Souls, Crow Country appears to be taking heavy influence from the original Resident Evil in terms of how it plays. Its visuals appear to be inspired by an entirely different source though: Final Fantasy VII, right down to the blocky character models. All that said though, it appears that the game won’t be a one-to-one recreation in either case. No, there’s more going on here.
