A large majority of handheld console makers are updating their designs with AMD's Ryzen 8040U "Hawk Point" APUs.
The handheld console market is currently dominated by AMD's Ryzen 7040 & Ryzen Z1 APUs based on the Phoenix silicon. This is due to the great performance per watt and graphics performance that these chips offer. Now handheld console makers are announcing updated designs that rock AMD's latest Ryzen 8040 "Hawk Point" APUs. The APUs were announced recently and are expected to launch by February 2024.
With the adoption from the laptop industry, it seems that AMD Hawk Point APUs are set to make a dominant entry within the handheld markets as well, starting with AYANEO's recently revealed FLIP handheld device, which will reportedly house Team Red's Ryzen 7 8840U.
The AYANEO FLIP is the industry's first "dual screen" handheld to be equipped with AMD's Hawk Point APUs, and interestingly, it will come with the choice of a Phoenix APU (Ryzen 7 7840U) as well, providing consumers with the best of both worlds.
If we talk about the AMD Ryzen 8040 APUs, they are categorized as a mere "refresh" of the existing Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" family but with some improvements to power management and the XDNA engine which enable the chip to perform slightly better. AMD's Hawk Point APUs are positioned between the previous Phoenix and the next-gen Strix Point lineups, which is why Team Red didn't decide to include big performance generational gaps.
Speaking of the AYANEO FLIP, it will reportedly come in two different configurations, the AYANEO FLIP KB, the dual-screen model is the AYANEO FLIP DS. It shows a resemblance similar to the iconic Nintendo DS, which is why it has garnered immense interest from the industry, especially Nintendo fans. Based on a leak by Liliputing, the handhelds will feature a 7-inch, 1080p IPS LCD, equipped with a 120Hz refresh rate. Other specifics about the handheld are unknown right now, but we expect them to be unveiled soon.
Apart from AYANEO, the well-known handheld manufacturer GPD has also announced that it will be integrating the AMD Hawk Point APUs such as the Ryzen 7 8840U across their entire handheld portfolio including the Win Mini.

The company has also released a teaser for the Win Mini handheld lineup. The next-gen handheld industry is framing up to be quite competitive, and we can't wait to see what it brings onboard for consumers in terms of innovation as well as pricing. Intel's Meteor Lake CPUs are also expected to be a major driver in the handheld market though we

Another viral post, this time on X (formerly Twitter), playfully reminds people to start reusing their carefully saved calendars featuring then-child star Jonathan Taylor Thomas -- who is now aged 42.
