EA has added yet another game to its running list of titles being shut down this year, with NHL 20 unfortunately on the chopping block. EA keeps a running list of all its games that will have their online connectivity severed. This way, fans of EA's games have plenty of time to play titles to their fullest before they lose key components of their functionality, but it's always disappointing whenever a game is shut down.
EA's sports games are especially susceptible to shutdowns due to expiring licenses and dwindling communities that quickly move on to the latest annual release. EA has shut down many of its sports games over the years, with more set to be shut down in 2024. Unfortunately for hockey fans, NHL 20 is one such EA sports title being shut down in 2024.
As pointed out by TrueAchievements, EA has confirmed that NHL 20 will shut down on September 16, 2024. At that point, NHL 20's online features will no longer be accessible, regardless if one is playing on PlayStation or Xbox. Previously, EA shut down NHL 19, and before that, NHL 21 was removed from the EA Play lineup. Anyone that wants to play NHL 20's online modes will want to act fast, as those modes and everything associated with them will cease to exist come September 16, though the game will still be playable in an offline capacity at least.
NHL 20 is just the latest EA game confirmed to be shutting down. Seven EA games are shutting down on March 21, including five F1 games, Micromachines World Series, and the multiplayer third-person shooter Rocket Arena. April will see Kim Kardashian Hollywood and Madden NFL 20 shut down, while May 24 will be the last day that EA fans can enjoy the online features found in EA Sports MLB Tap Sport Baseball 2022 and 2023, as well as F1 Mobile Racing and Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth. Super Mega Baseball 2 is shutting down on July 24. NHL 20 is currently the farthest-out when it comes to EA shutdowns, but it's entirely possible that more games will be added to the list as the year goes on.
It's definitely a bummer that these EA games are being shut down, but the bright side is fans have plenty of advanced notice and can prioritize the games being shut down if they care to do so. As far as NHL games go, NHL 24 is available now, and its online features should remain available for at least a few years.
