Fresh off its win for «Most Anticipated Game» at The Game Awards, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth lands on the cover of Game Informer. The second part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series breaks Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, and Red XIII out of the confines of Midgar and into a vast, open map where players can explore to their hearts' content. We spent two days at Square Enix's headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, seeing new sections of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and speaking to the legends of the team that made it. This cover story, along with our exclusive coverage spread out over the next few weeks, should give you a good idea of what to expect when the game launches in February. On top of that, this issue dives into our favorite games of 2023, giving you a full rundown of the best that the year had to offer.
Our cover art this month was designed in part by Tetsuya Nomura, one of the aforementioned legends we spoke to. It features a fiery image of the series' antagonist, Sephiroth, on the front, while the flames extend to the back side of the cover art, barely reaching a determined profile of our hero, Cloud Strife. So much of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth focuses on the relationships between characters, and this art emphasizes the strained relationship between these two former allies. You'll learn more about the making of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, how Rebirth is expanding the series in several ways, how the team is approaching certain scenes, and much more in our 12-page cover story!
But this issue is so much more than the cover story! 2023 ends next week, so that means it's time for Game Informer to highlight the best games that came out of the year with our annual Top 10 Games of the Year feature, as well as our Best and Brightest roundup to highlight our favorite games that didn't make our Top 10. We also have extended game features, including Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, the Riven remake, and Penny's Big Breakaway. We also have a unique look at what went into making the end credits for Marvel's Spider-Man 2, plus a rundown of the highs and lows of the games industry's 2023.
That's on top of our standard preview suite. In this issue, you can expect previews for Grand Theft Auto VI, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy, Tekken 8, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more!
Here's a closer look at this month's cover:
You can also try to nab a Game Informer Gold version of the issue. Limited to a numbered print run per issue, this premium version of Game Informer isn't available for sale. A teaser trailer for the Apex Legends and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth crossover has been released, showcasing new skins, weapons, cosmetics and more.
After racing through fifty upcoming games for the year ahead, we’ve finally come to the pointiest of pointy ends in our Most Wanted list for 2024, and it’s a real crowd pleaser of a PlayStation 5 exclusive. That’s right, it’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is only a couple short months away, but if you want to kick off the FF7 fun early, you can in… Apex Legends. Yes, a new Apex Legends and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth crossover event kicks off next week, which will include a new takeover that will allow you to find and wield the iconic Buster Sword. In addition to that, you can expect the usual array of cosmetics, including some pretty cool-looking skins that see Apex heroes dressing up as the likes of Tifa, Aerith, Barrett, and Yuffie. You can check out a quick trailer for the event, below.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is looking like its going to be a much more expansive game than its predecessor. Its main story alone is said to be around 40 hours long, while Square Enix says that with side content included, that can go up to over 100 hours. A lot of that is obviously going to be thanks to its vast, seamless open world setting, and speaking recently with Game Informer, the action RPG’s developers spoke a bit more about what that will bring to the table.
Unsurprisingly, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is going to continue to expand and recontextualize the original PS1 classic in more ways than one, from its seamless open world map to the content it will house to just how long the game will be. That, unsurprisingly, will mean added screentime and narrative content for a number of characters, among which fan-favourite villain Sephiroth will seemingly be one of the most prominent.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is going to feature a scene that made the game's Creative Director cry, but it's not what everybody may think.
Since Final Fantasy 7 Remake launched in 2021 and given how events played out, everyone has had the same question regarding a particular character’s fate Speaking to Game Informer, director Naoki Hamaguchi and creative director Tetsuya Nomura talk about how the team approached. Spoilers follow for Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the original game, so be warned.
Spoilers ahead for the original Final Fantasy 7 and potentially Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth!
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will introduce entirely new cities that weren't in the original 1997 JRPG in order to, in Square Enix's words, "go deeper and create this whole worldview of Rebirth."
Let’s be honest here for a moment. 2023 had many ups and downs in gaming, even if Geoff Keighley doesn’t want to admit it! One of the biggest “downers” of 2023 was a host of games coming out before they ever should’ve been released. Not only does that look bad on the industry, but on the people who worked on the games that should’ve known it would’ve been bad if released then. Yes, some of them might have been fighting back, but other times, it was clear that they were fine with those early releases. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s director won’t be among that cast of “characters” when the game releases next year.
When it comes to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, one of the biggest reasons that gamers want to get their hands on it sooner rather than later is because they want answers to the questions they have. Specifically, the “remake saga” has already made it clear that significant changes to the original game’s storyline will affect certain plot points in the next two titles. Some of them were basic “quality of life” changes to help flesh things out more. But then, some changes drastically affected how the story would be told and who might be alive at the end of it.
There is plenty of hype built up around Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. But if you needed another reason to get excited about this game, it looks like a lot more care and effort went into side content. We’re getting this next installment to the Final Fantasy VII remake in February of next year. As a result, there’s a bit more marketing and interviews popping up about the title and what fans can expect. Recently, Game Informer spoke with some of the folks behind Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. During their conversation, it was unveiled that The Witcher 3 played a significant role in where developers were taking inspiration.
