Shadowheart has a tough exterior. She's cold, doesn't feel comfortable opening up, and has her sights rigidly set on her faith and the path ahead of her. Oh, and getting rid of that bloody tadpole. But underneath it all is a kind-hearted friend. And one anecdote found in an in-game diary goes to show just how protective she can be of those she trusts.
"I am Nocturne," the diary opens. "I think as her. I see her when I look in the mirror. I can't remember the last time someone called me by the wrong name - Shadowheart has been swift to gently correct slips of the tongue, and even swifter in challenging those who'd use my forsworn name in malice. I'm lucky to have her as a friend."

Nocturne can be found in the House of Grief in the Lower City during Act 3. She's the quartermaster for the Sharran cloister, and you find her as part of Shadowheart's companion quest, 'A Familiar Face'. Once reunited, Nocturne will serve as a new merchant you can trade with, openly sharing her wares. If you scout around afterwards, you'll find Nocturne's diary, revealing that beneath it all, Shadowheart is eager and willing to punch transphobes who wrong her mates. The best kind of ally.
The diary makes it pretty clear that Nocturne is trans, 'forsworn name' just being an incredibly metal way to phrase deadname. She's even voiced by trans actor and YouTuber Abigail Thorn - you might know her as the host of Philosophy Tube or Nora in Harmony: The Fall of Reverie.
The two are said to be old friends, but the dialogue between them has fans thinking that it might go a bit beyond that. For instance, if you take control of Shadowheart and talk to Nocturne to try and uncover your lost memories, she'll make reference to a little scar on Shadowheart's elbow and a hidden place Shadowheart used to bring her to. Here, they would "talk, play, read, do each other's hair..."
There's also the second passage in the diary, "I can take her to our hideaway and remind her of herself. I'm getting better at it each time; I love seeing that look in her eyes when she finally remembers me."
Wherever you land on the two being just roommates or old lovers, Shadowheart stans trans rights.
