In some cases, tropes can be popular because of their epic scale or memorable impact, but others stick around more because of convenience than out of any particular love that players have for them.
is also far from the first game to arise from, even if it does stand as the flagship for games based on the RPG's fifth edition. From the unofficial 1975 video game to the original titles handled by Bioware, plenty have been based directly on the tabletop game. Its influence can also be felt in many RPGs that follow their own world and rules. Act 3 of is full of major story events and huge confrontations, but it also features some challenges that aren't as much on the serious side. One of these arises in the Elfsong Tavern, a bustling destination found in the Lower City of Baldur's GateIn the kitchen, Chef Roveer quickly establishes his frustration with a major rat infestation in the cellar, and he's all too happy to enlist the aid of a willing party to tackle the issue. Entering the cellar reveals just how widespread it is, as a veritable army of rats covers an entire room and quickly springs into action, forcing the initiative.
Fighting rats in cellars or sewers is a classic staple of both and various video game RPGs, typically used as an introductory encounter. Venturing downward to take on rodents establishes a basic quest structure with enemies who won't put up too much of a fight, making it a simple way to ease into an experience. Playing as Mary Jane Watson made for some of the most disappointing segments of the original, but the sequel makes some big changes to address the common complaints. Following more than one perspective in a video game can often be valuable and interesting, even if its taking time away from something as fundamentally enjoyable as playing as Spider-Man himself. The idea of stepping into Mary Jane's shoes was a good one on paper, but the game unfortunately didn't support it well enough from a gameplay perspective for it to ultimately feel worthwhile.

There’s a celebrated scene in Naughty Dog’s 2009 game Uncharted 2: Among Thieves in which the protagonist, Nathan Drake, just wanders around a village. He’s high up in the Himalayas; after a dramatic action sequence on a train, Drake fell unconscious and was rescued by a Tibetan Sherpa, who brought him to his home. Drake strolls around the village, exploring it, chatting with the locals even though they don’t understand his English. He pats a yak, kicks a football with some kids, disturbs the chickens, looks at the (stunning) view.

That wasn't all, though; The snippets of composer David Housden's score in the reveal trailer indicated this team was on to something.

It's possible to immortalize a custom character in , but it can be all too easy to make a mistake that will forever affect Tav's preserved legacy. Whether helping everyone in sight or going down a path of evil, it's safe to say that any protagonist is going to leave a major impact on the world. Making sure that history has something to remember them by might be a touch narcissistic, but it's arguably justified as long as it ends up looking good.
Late last month, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam opened a special exhibit in partnership with Pokemon, celebrating its 50th anniversary—and, in a move that's a little unwise in hindsight, also offered a limited-edition Pikachu card in the style of Gogh's piece «Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat».
does an admirable job accounting for player creativity and experimentation, but certain possibilities are blocked off by limitations that can be immersion-breaking and lead to some head-scratching moments. The task of emulating the experimentation of tabletop is a challenging one, as the lack of a dungeon master that can respond naturally to improvisation means that the game has to account for a surplus of scenarios ahead of time. Many of 's biggest failures to manage this are all tied to the same mechanic that feels like it has a uniquely incomplete implementation.
