Baldur's Gate 3 is already one of the most modded games of all-time, which is an impressive feat considering it launched out of early access a little over half a year ago. We already have people turning Gortash into a pickle, making Ketheric and Orin playable, and bringing Malenia from Elden Ring to the Sword Coast. There are a range of mods out there, but Baldur's Gate 3's constant updates can make creating mods a bit of a chore, sometimes breaking them and forcing modders to update them as necessary.
In an effort to help out its modding scene, Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian has revealed that it's currently working on a "robust" plan for mod support that will be released later this year that should make sure user-created mods don't fall apart whenever there's an update or hotfix. However, the most interesting part of this announcement is that this plan includes "cross-platform" mod support, suggesting that we may soon be able to download mods on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
According to Larian's director of publishing, Michael Douse, a system has already been built but needs extensive testing before it's rolled out. He also explains that the developer will be reaching out to certain members of the game's modding community, and that you'll want to follow the game's Discord community if you want further updates on how this ambitious modding system comes along.
Those who dabble in mods will know that they aren't really a common thing on consoles, so it'll be interesting to see how this system takes shape. Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Cities Skylines are probably the biggest titles out there that actually allow players to use mods on consoles, with Bethesda paving the way in that regard.
The modding scene is also very different depending on which console you have. PlayStation is a lot pickier when it comes to what is and isn't allowed, and its mod support is a lot less in-depth as a result, specifically in titles like Fallout 4. Still, the option will be nice for those of you out there on your fiftieth playthrough and want to spice things up a bit with some player-made content.
