Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida has shared much news at PAX East. To begin with, during the panel held last Friday, we learned a lot about the upcoming Rising Tide DLC, which drops on April 18 for PlayStation 5 and adds a new area, ally, and the Leviathan Eikon.

could be on its way to Xbox consoles, based on a comment from producer Naoki Yoshida. While a PC port is already in development, this is the first hint of the 2023 action RPG coming to other consoles.

One of them is allegedly a remake of Final Fantasy 9, and Naoki Yoshida – producer and director of Final Fantasy 14 – recently seemingly dropped some teases for the rumoured remake.

The Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail expansion will launch on July 2, Square Enix announced. Pre-orders will begin on March 26 and include three days of early access to the expansion on June 28, among other bonuses.

We’ll say this up front for those of you still exploring Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s vast world: there are no late-game story spoilers here. As seen in its pre-release debut via a new trailer late last year, the action RPG’s theme song “No Promises to Keep” is performed in-game by Aerith. Behind the scenes though, the track was composed by Nobuo Uematsu, the legendary composer behind the iconic soundtracks for much of the Final Fantasy series, including Final Fantasy VII Remake. The song’s vocals were performed by American singer Loren Allred, who brought her spellbinding singing voice to the track, augmenting the beautiful—yet tragic—world of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the epic story told within it.

In the world of video game soundtracks, you can’t get much more iconic than Nobuo Uematsu. Most well-known for composing soundtracks for the first nine Final Fantasy games, the musician has gone on to write tracks for many subsequent entries to the franchise, most recently penning the tearjerking theme song for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, No Promises to Keep.

Weapons are totally free if you can find them in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. While Buster Sword-ing through each chapter, you’ll find rare purple chests in dungeons and other story-specific areas. These chests contain unlockable weapons, which in turn unlock unique weapon abilities. These weapons don’t just increase your stats. By equipping a weapon and using its unique weapon ability over and over, you’ll eventually master that ability, permanently unlocking it for your character.

Bringing the once-doomed MMO Final Fantasy XIV back to life and directing the latest mainline title of the long-running franchise isn’t enough for Square Enix superstar Naoki Yoshida. In a new interview with Famitsu, Yoshida chatted at length about his desire to direct yet another major game for Square Enix.

All of your Summons in can be upgraded when you visit Divine Intel locations scattered in the regions of each story Chapter. These shrines host a rhythm mini-game you can complete to strengthen the powerful allies you call upon from red Materia. Interacting with Divine Intel spots will also let you make boss fights against the strongest summons much easier.

While there’s no shortage of ways to distract yourself while playing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, one of the most unexpected minigames is the surprisingly deep piano system. In most of the major hub towns you encounter across the expansive world, Cloud can find a piano to sit down at and tickle the keys. You’re free to play any song you want in free play, but you can turn this system into a full-on rhythm game, almost like Guitar Hero, by collecting sheet music of some of the game’s most iconic tracks. There’s even an NPC near each piano who will reward you if you get a high enough rank on each song. Cloud may not be the most expressive in his words, but he can sure play the piano with heart. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is overflowing with content, including a wide variety of side quests to undertake as you work through its 50+ hour adventure. Some of these are given to you by returning characters, such as the lovable screwup, Johnny, who has found himself entangled in a whole new mess this time around.
