One of the best things about owning an Android phone is the vast customization tools to help you personalize your experience. However, for some people, especially senior citizens, having these many options is a burden. We've compiled a list of tips to make your Android device more accessible.
1 Increase System Font Size for Better Visibility
If you often find yourself squinting in front of your phone while reading text messages, notifications, or system instructions, you should consider increasing the system font size for added visibility and lower strain on your eyes.
Let's see how to do this. Note that we're using a Samsung phone for this tutorial, but the steps will be mostly similar across all Android phones. You can see the same thing for Pixel phones in our dedicated guide.
First, go to Settings and tap the "Accessibility" menu.
Here, select "Visibility Enhancements."
Scroll down all the way and tap "Font Size and Style."
Now, use the slider to change the font size according to what's most comfortable for you. You'll be able to see a preview of the font size above the slider for reference.
2 Enlarge the Keyboard for Easier Typing
Similar to reading small text, typing on smartphones can be difficult for some people due to how tiny the keys on an on-screen smartphone keyboard are compared to an actual keyboard.
Luckily, most keyboard apps available for Android (including the system default pre-installed on your device) allow you to enlarge the keyboard for easier typing. Let's see how to do this with Gboard. Make sure the Gboard app on your phone is updated before you use the following instructions.
First, enter a text box to pull up the Gboard keyboard. Next, tap the Gboard toolbar button on the left.
Tap "Resize."
Now, simply drag the two pull tabs at the top and bottom to enlarge the keyboard. The more you enlarge the keyboard, the more it will occupy your screen—but only up to a certain point. You can also move the keyboard slightly up or down if that will help you type faster.
There are a bunch of other cool Gboard keyboard features that you should consider checking out, too.
3 Enable 3-Button Navigation
A lot of modern Android phones come with swipe gestures as the default navigation mode, and while it has its perks, it can be difficult to use for senior citizens as it has a learning curve. To make navigation easier, you should change the Android navigation style to three-button navigation, which you might already be more familiar with.
To do that, open your device Settings and go to the "Display" menu.
Swipe down and tap "Navigation Bar."
Here, tap and select the "Buttons" option.
You can also select the button order if you wish. Some people prefer the back button on the right, and some

Simple Mobile Tools was a collection of basic, free, open-source apps for Android devices, including a file manager, calendar, and photo gallery. The apps were popular alternatives to paid apps and services, but the developer sold out the app suite to ZipApps recently, which then proceeded to ruin the apps with subscriptions and ads. The Fossify project has picked up where Simple Mobile Tools left off, so you can keep using the excellent app suite on your phone or tablet.
A Fallout 4 player online has discovered a bizarre glitch that causes Cait to use her shotgun in a strange way that was certainly not intended by the developer. Cait is one of the most popular companions in Fallout 4, with her complex flaws making her an extremely compelling character to explore the Commonwealth alongside.
Getting the hang of combat in can be a challenge, but there's one optional setting that can make it easier to master without decreasing the actual threat that enemies pose. Building on the system established in, features a fusion of dynamic action combat with the menu-based ability, spell, and item options that return from the original It can be a lot to wrangle, and it's sometimes possible to get tripped up by the hectic nature of battle even when keeping a good handle on the system itself.
In a move that could potentially revolutionize the smartphone market, Apple is gearing up to introduce measures that will make it easier for users to switch from iPhones to Android phones. In fact, you may even be allowed to uninstall Safari. The catalyst behind this initiative is the European Union's Digital Markets Act, which Apple is diligently preparing to comply with.
A few years ago, MediaTek garnered its popularity through its Helio lineup of chipsets that were found in mid-range and affordable smartphones. The Taiwanese firm had cemented its position firmly in this category, but it was believed that the company could not match the likes of Qualcomm in the flagship silicon space.
The Final Fantasy VII Remake project trilogy will be console-exclusive to PlayStation, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment vice president of second- and third-party content ventures and strategic initiatives Christian Svensson.
There are few TV pleasures as dependable as the weirdo detective. It’s a trope as old as Arthur Conan Doyle — the skills necessary to deduce the wily ways of evildoers either demand someone be stranger than their peers or eventually make them that way. This can be misanthropic (Dr. Gregory House), endearingly annoying (the Psych boys), or some combination of the two (Castle), but it’s always good fuel for TV. Not only do you have a mystery to solve every episode, but you get to have fun watching normal-ass people just dealing with these characters — the weirder the better. And now, they’re making a comeback. Adrian Monk, Charlie Cale, Detective Danner — names new and old to the weirdo detective pantheon are cropping up on TV, joined this week by a face very familiar to some: Elsbeth Tascioni.
An Xbox 360 fan recently purchased a used console and discovered that it was one of the original versions of the system, complete with the classic Blades dashboard. Microsoft updated the Xbox 360 multiple times over the course of its lifespan. This included full-blown hardware revisions, as well as system software updates that completely revamp the user interface for the fan-favorite console.
Technology, as storied author Ursula K. Le Guin noted in a prescient 2005 post, is not limited to high-tech hardware but also encompasses the likes of paper, furniture, medicine, and much more. I would go further and argue that some outwardly high-tech hardware should not be classified as technology, and I will now point any naysayers to the GameScent Automated Gaming Scent Atomizer, a $180 AI-powered box that will fart out smells designed to match whatever game you're currently playing.
