A few years ago, MediaTek garnered its popularity through its Helio lineup of chipsets that were found in mid-range and affordable smartphones. The Taiwanese firm had cemented its position firmly in this category, but it was believed that the company could not match the likes of Qualcomm in the flagship silicon space.
The majority of doubters were proven incorrect in MediaTek’s capabilities because a new report states that the chipset maker is working with all Android device manufacturers, with Google being the exception. The company also has an extended portfolio of chipset designs, making it a force to be reckoned with as it shifts its focus towards the premium market, gunning for Qualcomm.

MediaTek is said to have 15 chipset designs for multiple Android phone makers; company is preparing its premium Dimensity 9400 to take on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 later this year
For the first quarter of 2024, the Economic Times reports that MediaTek has a multitude of chipset designs, outpacing its competitor Qualcomm. Anku Jain, managing director of MediaTek India, stated that earlier, Samsung and Nothing were the only two phone makers remaining that did not switch to the Taiwanese fabless semiconductor manufacturer, and with these two companies also becoming clients, only Google remains. However, it is unlikely that MediaTek will add the Mountain View giant to its clientele list, as the latter is already reported to be working on the Tensor G4 for the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro.
One of the biggest concerns for Qualcomm customers would be paying a premium for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, as a company executive has hinted that the upcoming chipset could be more expensive than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 thanks to shifting to custom Oryon cores. Given that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is estimated to cost $200, a rare opportunity presents itself for MediaTek, as it is also working on its Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 competitor, the Dimensity 9400, for a launch later this year. Assuming it can competitively price the Dimensity 9400, MediaTek can take away from Qualcomm’s market share in the coming quarters.
Morgan Stanley analysts have estimated that MediaTek’s global smartphone chipset market share can increase up to 35 percent in 2024, and with the company now having nearly every Android phone maker in its grasp, it is likely making its rivals a little nervous concerning future prospects.
