The Dimensity 9300 has set the stage for MediaTek, howling that it is back in the premium Android smartphone segment, and it intends to make its rivals nervous with the Dimensity 9400 launch. With the exception of Google and Apple, the Taiwanese firm has signed on every other phone maker as its customer, but Vivo is rumored to want a first crack at the company’s flagship silicon, and it may have already secured the first batch for itself. A new report also compares the performance differences of the Dimensity 9400 with the Dimensity 9300, claiming a 20 percent improvement.
Since October 2023, Dimensity 9300 shipments have remained strong, and according to a China Times report, MediaTek’s current flagship chipset generated around $1 billion in revenue for the company. No doubt MediaTek wishes to continue this momentum with the Dimensity 9400, which is slated to launch in the second half of 2024. Apparently, Vivo has already started moving against its competitors by being the first customer of the upcoming SoC.
Unfortunately, the report does not highlight how many units the Chinese phone maker has secured for its initial run, nor could we find how much each Dimensity 9400 unit costs. However, depending on the initial volume, MediaTek could have offered Vivo a decent concession, and assuming the Dimensity 9400 is more affordable than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, it will give the fabless semiconductor manufacturer a massive opportunity to capture more orders from other customers.
The report also mentions that the Dimensity 9400 is 20 percent better than the Dimensity 9300, but that is rather an ambiguous claim, as the details do not mention if this performance difference is in the single-core, multi-core, graphics, AI, or any other department, so it is best to treat this figure with a pinch of salt. Additionally, not everything is sunshine and rainbows because the Cortex-X5, which is said to be a part of the Dimensity 9400, is rumored to be running into overheating and underwhelming performance issues.
Since MediaTek’s upcoming flagship chipset is said to ship without any efficiency cores, following a similar approach to the Dimensity 9300, it could be a real problem maintaining acceptable temperatures, causing the silicon to leave tons of performance on the table when stressed. Naturally, some tweaking is needed, so let us see if MediaTek and Vivo have partnered behind closed doors to optimize the

Samsung’s struggles in bringing up the yields of its 3nm GAA process were well-known, but there is a positive update that a tipster provided, claiming that the Korean giant’s foundry has managed to increase that number to three times the original figure. This means that the previous 10-20 percent yields of the 3nm process is now hovering between 30-60 percent.
