Always in motion is the future of the Star Wars universe… at least when it comes to movies and television, where well more than half of the projects currently in development still have no publicly available release date. The world of Star Wars tabletop games, on the other hand, is a bit more predictable. Both this year and last, it seems like new releases have been coming down the Pyke just about every few months. Taken together with some excellent older titles still in print, it’s clear to me that we’re living in a golden age of Star Wars board games — especially if you roll in card games, TTRPGs, and miniatures games as well. Here are the very best ones.

A couple of weeks ago we announced our nominees for our 11th Annual Board Game Awards. As always, it was rough even choosing which games to nominate. Since then, we’ve put our heads together, tested the games, and come up with a consensus.
Today we are excited to announce the winners of our 2023 Board Game Awards. As usual, the voting was difficult, and some categories were extremely tight. But our editorial staff (with input from our readers) have made their selections. So, without further ado, here are the winners of our 11th Annual Board Game Quest Awards. One of our Best of Gen Con 2023 picks makes its return, winning our award for Best Cooperative board game. Sky Team tasks 2 players with landing an airplane successfully in a variety of scenarios. Using a dice-placement mechanism, players need to work together to control the different aspects of the plane. You’ll assign dice to spaces in your cockpit to balance the axis of your plane, control its speed, deploy the flaps, extend the landing gear, and contact the control tower to clear your path. It’s definitely a unique game and a great play experience.

Our 2020 Game of the Year stormed back last year with its second expansion, and it was a great one. The Missing Expedition not only adds more content for your games of Lost Ruins of Arnak, but adds in a solo/cooperative campaign. We were skeptical of how well this new gameplay mode would work, but it’s surprisingly solid. The gameplay fits right in with the core loop of Lost Ruins of Arnak, letting you experience the game through much better solo mode than originally came with the game.

One of the most innovative games of the year was also one of our favorite tactical games. In Snap Ship Tactics, you will literally build your ship out of snap-together pieces before customizing them and sending them off to skirmish your opponents’ ships. You can follow the build plans for each ship, or just customize it to your heart’s desire. Beyond the game’s great toy factor is its fantastic gameplay. It uses an action-cube system to activate the different parts of your ship, letting you fire guns, maneuver, or even launch missiles. You’re required to wait for your weapons to cool down to use them again, which adds a level of strategic play.

Wingspan publisher’s next board game is inspired by Zelda, Elden Ring, and The Witcher
Jamey Stegmaier, co-founder of Stonemaier Games, has made an indelible mark on board gaming since he entered the space in 2011. Not only has he designed and published incredible strategy games like Scythe and Viticulture, but he also helped produce and publish Elizabeth Hargrave’s genre-defining nature-themed board game Wingspanand its sequel. On Wednesday, he announced a secret project, the culmination of seven long years of work. It’s called Vantage, and it might be one of the most exciting tabletop projects slated for 2025.

The Mandalorian: Adventures board game, co-designed by Corey Konieczka, is full of surprises
Corey Konieczka, acclaimed board game designer of strategy games such as Star Wars: Rebellionand Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game, launched his own studio, Unexpected Games, in 2021. After a series of high-concept titles, including puzzle-based The Initiativeand the dynamic 3,000 Scoundrels, he’s back for another stab at a licensed franchise. The Mandalorian: Adventures is a cooperative board game with multiple modes, and itarrives at hobby shops and online in the third quarter. In a recent interview with Polygon, Konieczka revealed some of its secrets — including what promises to be a highly anticipated traitor mode.

Final Fantasy Moogle Board Game Announced
Square Enix has formally unveiled a moogle-themed board game based off of characters from the acclaimed PS2 title Final Fantasy 12. This certainly isn't thebombastic Final Fantasy 12 remake announcement some fans may have been hoping for. However, it's at least a nice reminder that Square Enix hasn't entirely forgotten about the world of Ivalice and the games that take place within it.

Rayman Is Getting His Very Own Board Game, Launching Before The End Of 2024
Fans of various video game series continue to suffer through a lack of new installments coming anytime soon. Amazon's Fallout adaptation, for example, has reminded us how long we are going to be waiting for Fallout 5. At least Bethesda has confirmed there's something to look forward to on the video game landscape. Rayman fans have had nothing major for more than a decade, and even though a lifeline was thrown their way this week, it isn't a new video game.
