It’s generally a sketchy idea to build a companion from parts, even at the very best of times. Intentions may be good but surprises will be few, and that’s gong to cause problems in keeping a relationship going. Still, it worked out all right for Cherry and her creator Shinji Fallon, right up to the point the sweet, loving robot took a bullet to the head and was torn almost completely apart as her creator was abducted. It turned out Shinji had created better than she may have expected seeing as Cherry survived, put back together by the mechanic Raz in a highly-altered form that’s far more capable than the old one of going on the combination bloody revenge spree and rescue mission.
Cookie Cutter is a metroidvania featuring a transformed companion-bot workout out her rage in a gleefully violent rampage rendered in detailed hand-drawn animation. Cherry’s waifu aspect has been burned away, replaced with a truck-stop waitress design that’s far more capable of wielding a giant chainsaw, electric guitar, or a huge motorcycle as weapons, or going hands-on to reach inside a creature and yank it inside out. Cherry’s adventure is going to be a rude, over-the-top trek with a bad attitude and more than a few NSFW creatures and companions, topped off with standard metroidvania progression through its large maps. It’s been looking better with each new trailer, and now it’s got a release date.
The latest trailer dropped today giving a full non-Early-Access release of December 14, just squeaking by before the end of the year. It gives a few hints beyond the broad gameplay information we’ve seen so far, like a peek at the upgrade screen where different abilities can be equipped, but like the previous trailers it mostly trades in attitude and animation. Which, to be fair, Cookie Cutter’s got plenty of each and they look great, too. It’s only a couple more weeks before Cookie Cutter is released on the world, PC, PS5, and Xbox X/S, but the most obvious question may take a bit longer to get an answer- Seeing as Shinji created Cherry as a perfect companion-bot, and post-kidnapping Cherry is so completely different, are we getting the “What have you become!?” ending or the “I’d love you in any incarnation” one? Love is weird and complicated, but the hours of violence to try and save it should be a huge amount of fun.
