Lego discovered gamers want their favorite characters and backdrops to be turned into toy bricks when it released its first wave of Super Mario items. Sonic has quickly become the video game character with the most sets after his plumbing rival, though. Apple Arcade has played host to a variety of outstanding games over the years – from Konami’s release of a new side-scrolling Castlevania adventure to Fantasian bringing back the classic Final Fantasy feel to more recent games like Samba Di Amigo getting an exclusive version with a storyline for the service. Today, Sega releases an all-new Sonic game exclusively to Apple Arcade in the form of Sonic Dream Team. This lightning-fast adventure sees a new 3D Sonic game created for the service and allows players to play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Cream, Rouge, and Amy Rose.
The game’s premise is that Dr. Eggman has locked Sonic’s friends into a dream-like state and put all of these courses in front of them, it’s a new twist on the long-running franchise and offers up a surprisingly high amount of fun for a game that is mobile-first in theory. The emphasis on speed and speedrunner for some of the stages that become a bit like an arcade racing game with checkpoints. The blend of stage variety is impressive, with each set of characters has their own pros and cons.
Sonic and Amy are fast, Rouge and Knuckles can climb, and Tails and Cream have the ability to fly. Each stage has their own perks for each character type, with exclusive areas to enjoy depending on who you’re using. The sense of speed is impressive and playing on the newest Apple TV reveals a game that runs quite smoothly, but does suffer from some technical shortcomings.
There are a ton of jagged edges everywhere for larger parts of the environment and it actually gets somewhat distracting after a while because they’re so prominent. Still, the core game never slows down and things like rail grinds, boost jumps and jumping homing attacks allow it to feel like a bite-sized Sonic adventure in a lot of ways. Stages aren’t long, but also never overstay their welcome and the ability to replay stages and try them out with different characters keeps them fresher than one might expect.
So many mobile-style games feel the same across the board, but Sonic Dream Team allows for a different style to be used for each character set. It’s a lot of fun and it’s impressive to see a game like this take Sonic in a new direction in some ways while still staying true to form. In some ways, I’d say this is more overall fun than Sonic Frontiers – especially if you’re just trying to kick back and play for 15 minute spells.

Sonic Dream Team Review
Hot on the heels of a new full-sized Sonic game in Sonic Superstars, the Apple Arcade exclusive Sonic Dream Team might not look like it has much to offer at first. It only has a dozen levels, and all you get control-wise are a D-pad and two buttons. For some, the fact that it’s only available on Apple devices (at least for the time being) is a non-starter all its own. But despite all that, Sonic Dream Team more than manages to justify its existence – in fact, its superb level design and bite-sized missions make it one of the most fun, creative, and enjoyable 3D platformers I’ve played in a long time.
