Relic has revealed that they will continue to make their video games with Sega, in spite of separating from their former publisher.

Relic Entertainment recently announced that it was splitting from parent company Sega and going back to being an independent studio, but with that shake-up has come unfortunate upheaval, with the developer joining the ever-growing list of companies in the games industry that have been hit with layoffs.

Esteemed developer Relic Entertainment — the creators of acclaimed RTS franchises like Homeworld and Company of Heroes — has confirmed a further round of layoffs at the Canadian-based studio. This news came only a few days after Relic's departure from Sega as a former subsidiary of the company.

Relic Entertainment has said it will continue supporting its existing games following the news that it’s to be sold by current owner Sega.

Sega has announced that three companies under its umbrella are facing layoffs, and it has also sold Relic Entertainment, the well-known developer behind multiple successful franchises. Since its founding in 1997, Relic Entertainment has released several popular games, including four Warhammer 40,000 titles, Company of Heroes and its two sequels, the first two games in the Homeworld series, and Age of Empires 4. The company has earned a reputation in the industry primarily as a skillful developer of real-time strategy games but has dabbled in other genres as well.

SEGA has sold Relic Entertainment and will reduce headcount by approximately 240 roles at several of its European studios with the aim of optimizing fixed expenses, the company announced.

Sega will shed 240 staff across its European studios, and sell off Company of Heroes developer Relic Entertainment as part of a cost-cutting drive.

Along with announcing layoffs across a number of its UK-based studios, Sega has announced another notable shift for its Western business. Canadian studio Relic Entertainment is going back to being an independent studio, as it was for the first seven years of its life (until 2004).

Developers World’s Edge have announced their plans to follow up last year’s The Sultans Ascend DLC for Age of Empires 4 - said to be the best-selling expansion in the entire series’ history - with some new additions to the latest RTS instalment this spring.

Company of Heroes Collection—a remaster of the original real-time strategy game Company of Heroes for the Nintendo Switch—now has a release date. The game will be hitting Nintendo’s platform on October 12. Check out the new trailer below.

A new trailer for Age of Empires 4 has been released, showcasing a new expansion, The Sultans Ascend. The expansion brings with it new factions—the Japanese and Byzantine factions—as well as a new campaign that will be set in the Middle East. The Sultans Ascend is slated for release on November 14.
