Gearbox Publishing and Hopoo Games have announced a collaboration between roguelite third-person action game Risk of Rain 2 and sidescroller Dead Cells. As part of the collaboration, Risk of Rain 2 will be getting the latter’s The Prisoner as a free alt skin for the Mercenary.

Developer Blackbird Interactive has released a new trailer for its upcoming space-based real-time strategy game Homeworld 3. This time around, the trailer gives us a look at the history of the Homeworld universe, providing a quick history lesson in the process. Check it out below.

I like co-op shooter Remnant 2, because it doesn't pretend to be much more than what it is: a dodgerollathon where, in between dodge rolls, you fill demons with bullets. I've been meaning to go back to it, so it's convenient that there's more DLC arriving soon. Dubbed The Forgotten Kingdom, it adds a new Invoker archetype, fleshes out an existing jungle biome, and introduces more gear, more monsters, and the like. Yes, count me in.

Heart Machine’s Hyper Light Breaker, a follow-up to the acclaimed Hyper Light Drifter, enters early access in the coming months. While it’s looked good thus far, as players defeat bosses and activate beacons to reach the Abyss King, the biomes have their own threats to beware of. Enter the Flame Wizard, a mini-boss that seemingly assails you at any time.

Gearbox Publishing and developer Wabisabi Games have announced single-player 3D platformer RKGK / Rakugaki for PC (Steam). It will launch this summer.

Indie studio Evil Empire is teaming up with a host of other indie developers for a new showcase. Set for April 10 at 5pm GMT, the showcase has been dubbed the Triple-i Initiative, and will feature more than 30 indie games.

Embracer have announced that they're selling Borderlands developers Gearbox Entertainment to Take-Two Interactive, owners of 2K Games and GTA 6 developers Rockstar, for $460 million in Take-Two shares. Three Gearbox Software studios - the flagship studio in Texas, together with Gearbox Montréal and Gearbox Quebec - will change hands as part of the deal. Take-Two will also acquire the Borderlands and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands franchises, together with Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms and Duke Nukem.

After delaying the launch of Homeworld 3 by two months to address criticism of the spacefleet shoot-o-strategy game's demo, developers Blackbird Interactive have now laid out what they're changing. Improved controls, tougher ships, more useful formations, better Attack Move command, more HUD options, and more types of War Games mode objectives are among the tweaks and improvements detailed by game director Lance Mueller in a 3000-word blogblast. "This past month, everyone was heads down discussing every post we saw from Steam, social, Reddit, Discord and beyond," he explained. They have plans.

With its early access release window set, Heart Machine’s Hyper Light Breaker has received some new pre-alpha gameplay courtesy of Game Informer. Combat is the biggest focus against different enemies, but plenty of exploration is also showcased. Check it out below.

Heart Machine, the studio behind Hyper Light Drifter, has revealed that the next game in the series, Hyper Light Breaker, will be coming to PC as an early access title this summer, as reported by IGN. Motiga’s Gigantic, a MOBA shooter whose servers shut down in 2018, is getting resurrected, courtesy of abstraction and Gearbox Publishing. Gigantic: Rampage Edition launches on April 9th for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC, retailing for $19.99. While it features the same content as the original release, there’s also new content. Check out the announcement trailer below.

Gigantic, the free-to-play team brawler from a former StarCraft and Guild Wars designer, which launched (fully) in 2017 and closed the following year, is returning as Gigantic: Rampage Edition. It's no longer free-to-play, but a "premium and definitive release" of the original, and it's due on April 9th.

A financial report from Subnautica 2 publisher Krafton said the underwater survival sequel would adopt a "game-as-a-service model". Cue much gnashing of teeth and rending of shirts, so much so that developers Unknown Worlds have clarified what that means. "No season passes. No battle passes. No subscription."

Good news, star admirals with decent CPM! Gearbox and Blackbird Interactive's strategy escapade Homeworld 3 has a demo on Steam. It's been live for a few days, actually, but whether due to the bombardment of other Steam Fest goodies or my being led astray by the similar-but-nerdier Nebulous: Fleet Command, I didn't try it till last night. The demo includes a tutorial mission, four maps and the War Games mode, a one-to-three player affair which essentially turns Homeworld into a roguelike - pitching you up against unpredictable opposition while unlocking new fleets and doling out Artifacts that augment your vessels.

UPDATE 11.46pm: With a launch tantalisingly close for developer Blackbird Interactive's oft-delayed Homeworld 3, it's happened again: the studio has announced it'll be pushing back the real-time sci-fi strategy's release once more, this time until 13th May, to «ensure that we're making the final tweaks needed to deliver at the level of quality that we strive for».

Homeworld 3's release date has been pushed back from March 8th to May 13th 2024, in order to build on player feedback to this week's Steam Next Fest War Games demo, which will be available till February 12th, 10am PT or 6pm GMT. The associated joint statement from developers Blackbird Interactive and publishers Gearbox arrived within hours of me posting about said Homeworld 3 demo and saying that while I am fully onboard with many aspects of the new space strategy game, I do have reservations about its controls.

Hopoo Games has released a new patch for Risk of Rain Returns, focusing on bug fixes. It addresses crashes relating to text rendering in specific languages, Huntress’s alternate secondary attack when playing online and Acrid’s bubble if it touched an allied Bramble’s head.

My Remnant 2 character is dangerously close to joining the vast pantheon of characters I've left in limbo, just after completing the tutorial - a race of outcasts we might call the Abandonians, kicking their heels at campfires and savepoints, while I drift guiltily back to older games I've already completed several times over. It's not that I dislike Gunfire's sci-fantasy co-op shooter - the multiple-dimension premise is pleasantly loopy, and I like the variety of procgen landscapes. There just isn't enough time in the day, not when I'm replaying Into The Breach for the 14th time. Still, perhaps the introduction of a new mode built for quickfix, story-free sessions could persuade me to give 2023's 24th best game another whirl?

Remnant 2's first expansion, The Awakened King, is right around the corner, and ahead of its release next Tuesday, 14th November, developer Gunfire Games has revealed a second copy of the DLC won't be required to play it with a friend.

You can take Hopoo Games out of Risk of Rain, as evidenced by the upcoming Seekers of the Storm DLC for Risk of Rain 2, developed by Gearbox. Gearbox Publishing and developer Frima have announced Risk of Rain: Hostile Worlds, a free-to-play shooter action RPG in development for iOS and Android. A release date was not announced.

There’s not much information available, though its screenshots indicate mysterious blue lights in the game’s current stages. A new patch is also available with some…interesting patch notes.

Remnant 2 designer Ben Cureton has revealed a host of features coming to the game as part of its next update, which is slated for release later this week. In a post on X, Cureton has revealed that, among other things, Remnant 2 will also come with the addition of PlayStation icons for the PC version, accessibility features like toggle aim and hold sprint, and a potato mode for lower-specced computers.

It had some issues, which the team has been handling, but there are also questions about upcoming features, like crossplay. While it wasn’t discussing the same before launch, game director David Adams has confirmed that the team is “looking at it.”
