Unity “sorry” about controversy, makes changes after “hard feedback”

Unity is the cross-platform engine used by many of my favorite developers to create everything from small indie gems to bigger, more well-known games. The company recently disclosed upcoming changes to its fee policy which would see developers pay per-install of their games. The out-of-the-blue announcement was controversial, prompting a variety of game devs to respond detailing why this would have a negative impact on their work, with some creators going as far as backing out of using the engine altogether.

Unity walking back parts of its controversial runtime fee

In an open letter to its community, Unity has revealed its reworked free structure and controversial runtime fee changes. Under the new structure, the Unity Personal edition will remain free and incur no runtime fee. The new cap before the fee starts has been increased from $100,000 to $200,000, and no game with under $1 million in trailing 12-month revenue will be subject to the fee. Interestingly, the new Runtime Fee will only apply to the next version of Unity that is shipping in 2024. Already shipped and current in-development projects will not be subject to the fee unless they upgrade to the 2024 version of Unity. In the post, Marc Whitten, leader of the Unity Create team apologized for what has transpired in recent weeks.

Unity Updates Their Pricing Policy Going Into 2024

Unity has proven to be a popular video game engine. This engine also has proven to be quite popular for newcomers to the video game industry. As a result, we have seen quite a few indie games launch through Unity. However, this month was quite rocky for the engine as a new pricing policy was being implemented. Called the Unity Runtime Fee, the outrage that came with the policy spread online with protests and calling out Unity developers to change their engines or even delist their games.

Games consoles are infuriatingly exempt from California's otherwise important new right to repair bill

California, the biggest state in the US when it comes to both population and the sheer volume of tech companies squeezed into its borders, has just passed the country's most extreme right to repair bill in the US (via Ars Technica). It's the third state to pass such a bill, but goes further than either Minnesota or New York in that it forces companies to support their products for longer. But while it will cover gaming PCs and laptops, games console manufacturers get a free pass.

The Continental looks more like Kill Bill than John Wick

Until morale improves, the John Wick franchise will continue to hand out beatings — this time in the ’70s. The first full trailer for the prequel miniseries The Continental: From the World of John Wick is appropriately groovy, but it feels less like the work of John Wick director Chad Stahelski, and more like something dreamed up by Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, working in Kill Bill/Jackie Brown mode.

Personal Data Protection Bill: Sorely needed, but what of ground reality?

A lot of excitement has been generated in the media about the new Personal Data Protection Bill being presented in the Parliament on Thursday. Some have called it a landmark bill, some have called it a proof of the government's commitment to the protection of the rights of the citizens and so on. However, it has been many years since the landmark Puttaswamy judgment by the Supreme Court declared privacy as an inalienable Fundamental right of all citizens was rendered. It took the government so many years to actually bring a bill to the Parliament after multiple attempts, which, for various reasons, were withdrawn or never considered to be put up for voting. Also, in the current version of the bill, a lot of underspecification leaves a lot of room for maneuvering by the government -- and in some cases the data protection board -- which as per the bill will be constituted by the government.
