A new update for the Tomb Raider Remastered Trilogy has addressed one of the biggest complaints from fans by making keys easier to see while using modern graphics.
Tomb Raider fans have been begging for something new from the series for years now and that's kind of what they got earlier this year. Although it's not the long-awaited new adventure that's been in the works for some time, we did at least get a remastered trilogy of the first three games that adds modern controls, a photo mode, and the option to swap between classic and modern graphics.
Although the remastered trilogy was generally a big hit with fans (and sold a lot better than most were expecting it to) there were some issues with it, most of which come from the modern graphics. Although they do look great and modernise the first three Tomb Raider games in a big way, the new coat of paint doesn't quite work for everything.
From bodies of water that don't look like they're flowing when they are (causing players to leap into them accidentally) to certain parts of the game being hard to traverse without knowing where you're going, the modern graphics can be hard to play in. Without a doubt, the biggest problem comes from the keys that can be found throughout levels, which were next to impossible to see at launch.
Despite being bright silver and very easy to see (although not so easy to find) in the original trilogy, the modern graphics would make keys very hard to see, to the point that a lot of fans were completely missing them and claiming that they weren't there. Tomb Raider veterans would at least know where they're supposed to be, but if you're a newcomer to the classic games then you were definitely going to have trouble.
Fans have been complaining about this since the game launched and, nearly a month later, it's finally been fixed. The update just went live for the remastered trilogy and, among updating some textures and generally making a bunch of improvements to the game, it has also "reworked pickup items in dimly lit locations to be more visible".
I went back into the Remastered Trilogy to find the keys and see how they look in the modern style and, as you can see from the photo above, they do in fact look a lot brighter and easier to spot than they originally did. You can't go blaming the graphics for missing things, now.
The original trilogy of Tomb Raider games for PS1 have been remastered for modern platforms. The visuals for all three games have been upgraded, all DLC is included, and players can switch between the old and new graphics.
