Grasshopper Manufacture has announced that Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered will launch this year for PS4, PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. A playable demo is currently available at PAX East 2024, where attendees can go hands-on with the title until March 24th.
Available to wishlist on Steam, the Xbox Store and PlayStation Store, the title is a remaster of Grasshopper’s 2011 cult-classic shooter. It sees demon hunter Garcia Hotspur and Johnson traversing the underworld to save Paula, his lover. Written by Goichi Suda and produced by Shinji Mikami, players fight through hordes of demons, using the light to exploit their weaknesses.
Of course, given the creative minds involved, there are all sorts of other mechanics, including side-scrolling levels. Grasshopper hasn’t revealed what kind of improvements fans can expect from the remaster, though it should support 4K/60 FPS on current-gen platforms. Stay tuned for more details, and in the meantime, check out our review of the Xbox 360 version here.

The famous maxim of «one shot, one kill» gets an upgrade in new puzzle/shooter hybrid. Published by Devolver Digital and developed primarily by Berlin-based creator René Rother, 's lo-fi greasy visual style frames a macabre story of revenge, as its mute masked protagonist murders their way up the ranks of a twisted smalltown cult. This telekinetic sniper – dubbed «The Girl» – is able to control each fired bullet from kill to kill, allowing for extended streaks that zigzag across gritty dioramas in a medley of blood.

Shadows Of The Damned launched during a fascinating part of the PS3 era, where EA suddenly started publishing smaller titles, like the equally iconic Alice: Madness Returns. The business model didn’t last long, but we’re still grateful for the aforementioned third-person shooter, which was co-designed by industry icons Suda51 and Shinji Mikami. And as previously reported it’s getting a PS5 and PS4 remaster, due out later this year.
Earlier this month, the upcoming Shadows of the Damned remake got an official title, and one fitting for its tongue-in-cheek vibes: Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered. Due to hit shelves sometime in 2024, fans of the original 2011 title are eager to return to the bizarre world of Garcia Hotspur. Apparently, the game’s writer Suda51 is also extremely interested.
When it comes to cult classics, you probably won't be able to find a developer out there as consistent with them as Suda51 and Grasshopper Manufacture. No More Heroes, Lollipop Chainsaw, and Shadows of the Damned are all very well-liked games that never blew anyone away in terms of sales, but the quirky and unique elements of Suda's games have given him a very loyal and adoring fanbase.
Shadows of the Damned was released way back in 2011 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as a collaboration between two of the most iconic Japanese video game makers: Shinji Mikami (of Resident Evil fame) and Goichi Suda, otherwise known as Suda51. Although the hyper-violent, third-person corridor shooter/action-adventure romp didn't make waves with its sales, critics were pretty positive. And now, after 13 long years, Grasshopper and Suda are bringingShadows of the Damned back with theHella Remastered edition, launching sometime this year.
Just over a year ago, Shinji Mikami - he of directing the original Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4 fame - was confirmed to be leaving Tango Gameworks, the studio that he had co-founded over a decade earlier to create a modern successor to his survival-horror classics, The Evil Within.
Grasshopper Manufacture has revealed all the platforms that the upcoming Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered will launch on. This Shadows of the Damned remaster was first announced last June, surprising several gamers. Shadows of the Damned is considered an underrated title by Grasshopper Manufacture that hasn't had a modern release in over a decade, being delisted from digital stores in 2021.
Resident Evil 9 is reportedly being developed as an open-world game.
Shadows of the Damned, the unexpected collaboration between No More Heroes, Killer7 and Lollipop Chainsaw creator Goichi ‘Suda51’ Suda and Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, will finally see a PC release with a new remake later this year - over a decade after it first hit consoles.
