Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants Review

Historically, Sea of Thieves and I go way back. I played a few hundred hours of Sea of Thieves up until when the Pirates of the Caribbean update came out. I quit because I felt like 80% of what I did was a waste of time. I did soldier through, mostly because I played the game with my family. Unfortunately, after we had to cut a lengthy adventure short for the Pirates of the Caribbean story and lost a few hours of progress, we all hung it up, and I uninstalled the game.

Guardian Tactics: Deck of the Chosen is an upcoming roguelike deck builder from the creators of Timelie, Urnique Studio. It functions a bit differently from what you might be used to from roguelikes. As of March 29th, Urnique Studio has released the demo for Guardian Tactics, and I got the chance to check it out. One of my favorite pastimes growing up was working on a jigsaw puzzle with family, and even now it’s a popular activity to bring with us on vacations as a way to casually spend some time chatting around the table. This company takes that experience and adds a fun twist by incorporating story and mystery into the mix once the puzzle is finished.

Digital Sun’s previous outings, The Mageseeker and Moonlighter, were both fun games, but Moonlighter delighted me not only with its quality, but also its unusual genre combination. In this, Cataclismo is shaping up to be quite the worthy successor. While Moonlighter was half classic Legend of Zelda and half shopkeep simulator, Cataclismo is half tower defense and half base-building real-time strategy (with base-building inspired by LEGO). It’s also loads of fun, based on the hours I’ve already spent playing it. If the studio nails the landing with the full release, I’ll be spending far more time in its eerily charming world.

I found myself in a variety of odd situations while solving puzzles in Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. I spent some time staring at a mid-century movie poster for a documentary about a decomposing cat, wondering if I should focus on the runtime or the date it came out. I pulled up old hotel blueprints and deciphered the math of dead architects. I played a handful of ASCII-style PC games to receive messages from a 19th-century magician who calls me his sister. I found some toy blocks and shoved them into the walls of a secret cathedral. I slipped between realities and traversed a maze that shattered into shard-like pieces under my feet. I watched a woman fall to her death. I wondered if that woman was me.

Developer Cradle Games and publisher GameMill Entertainment’s beat ’em up title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. Check out the game’s launch trailer below.

If Dave the Diver proves anything, it's that one shouldn't make judgements based on appearances. Not only does the loveable lead character exceed the expectations of his cohorts at every turn, but the game itself goes well beyond what it looks like. At a glance, this is a charming adventure about exploring the sea, catching fish, and running a sushi restaurant. It is all that, but it also refuses to settle, constantly evolving the experience in surprising and compelling ways.
