Star Citizen Has Released A $48,000 Spaceship Bundle

Star Citizen is notorious in the industry for being a game that just will not launch. It was originally intended to launch in 2014, but has been pushed back again and again with no release date in sight. The game's fans are still somehow on board though, having raised well over half a billion dollars through crowdfunding, with even more cash flowing into the developer's coffers thanks to some extremely pricey DLC options.

Besides forever being in alpha, Star Citizen also has a reputation for its baffling monetization options, mostly due to it selling individual spaceships for hundreds of dollars at a time. It more than likely holds the record for the most expensive piece of DLC the industry has ever seen, and if it didn't before, it certainly does now.

First reported by PC Gamer, a new bundle was just released for Star Citizen called the Legatus 2953 package. Grabbing this bundle will get you over 175 vessels from "every manufacturer of note", which is every single ship "released and concepted through 2953". That sounds like a pretty good deal, until you realize the bundle costs an eye-watering $48,000 dollars.

For the same price as a new car, university tuition, or the down payment on a luxury villa, you can grab yourself over 175 virtual spaceships. The absurdity somehow doesn't stop there either, as the Legatus 2953 package is only available to purchase for players who are in the game's exclusive Chairman's Club, which you can only access if you're already spent over $1,000 on the game so far.

Obviously, this bundle isn't for the average Star Citizen player, and if you have enough disposable income to throw away over $48,000 on a single video game, then more power to you. It's still not a great look for a game that's been raking in crowdfunded money for well over a decade now, with still no release date in sight and not even the slightest hint that one is coming in the near future.

Thankfully, we did recently get an update on Squadron 42, the single-player story campaign that was announced alongside Star Citizen way back when. Developer Cloud Imperium Games recently claimed that the game is now "feature complete" and has entered the "polishing phase", though it didn't actually announce a release window at the time. Now where have we heard that one before?
