The upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake may have given its protagonist a makeover to make him look younger.
When the game was officially announced in October 2022 it was accompanied by the first trailer, showing protagonist James Sunderland as he arrives at Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his dead wife asking him to return.
However, some fans of the series pointed out that James looked older than he did in the original version of Silent Hill 2, where the character was supposed to be 29 years old.
It was later confirmed in a January 2023 interview with IGN that James had indeed been made older, with producer Motoi Okamoto saying the team “decided to raise James’s age in the game a bit”.
According to Okamoto, it was decided “to depict a James who has had to suffer through more in his life as an adult”, and that making him older would also let fans of the original, who are now 20 years older than they were, relate to him better.
It would appear, though, that this decision may have been reversed, with a new screenshot appearing in the game’s Steam backend, as tracked by SteamDB.
This new image appears to show James with a new, younger-looking face. X user Rino put together a comparison image showing the new image at the top, the 2022 trailer in the middle and the original game at the bottom.
The Silent Hill 2 remake has been the subject of much debate since its announcement, and a second trailer in January 2024 which focused on combat did nothing to quell it.
This second trailer proved divisive, and currenlty only has 51% likes vs dislikes on YouTube.
The following month, Bloober Team president Piotr Babienosaid the trailer “does not reflect the spirit of the game”, saying the marketing side of things was Konami‘s responsibility.
“It is not the spirit of either what it used to be or what we are creating now,” Babieno said. “We are trying to fully reflect this romantic vision about the game, which debuted 22 years ago.
“We think that when players see the real gameplay, the real game, they will judge it in a completely different way.”

Bloober Team has said it’s “very confident” in its upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake.
Bloober Team has admitted in a recent shareholders report that the Silent Hill 2 remake is "its most important test", but one that it's excited and confident about.
Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno announced some good news for fans anticipating the Silent Hill 2 remake, stating a release date will be announced soon. There have been a number of rumors surrounding Silent Hill 2, with gamers being given possible release windows of Bloober Team's upcoming classic Konami horror game remake. Many of them have stated that Silent Hill 2 will likely be released sometime this year, which may appear to be the case if Babieno is to be believed.
When are we finally going to get a release date for the Silent Hill 2 remake? The game is widely expected to launch sometime in 2024, but PR from Konami has been spotty at best. We got a somewhat-questionable trailer back in February (that even developer Bloober Team criticized as not representative of the final game) and as we head deeper into the year, there’s still a lot to be nailed down. The game’s been rated by the ESRB and there are rumors it may pop up at a PlayStation Showcase next month, but Konami themselves have remained silent.
Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno has provided an update on Silent Hill 2 in an IR/conference following the group’s consolidated annual report for 2023 (via MauroNL on Twitter). He noted that the team is “in the final stages of work” on the remake, and “We expect that a release date and platforms on which the game will appear will be revealed soon.”

Konami and Bloober Team have been unnervingly quiet about Silent Hill 2’s upcoming remake, but though official details have been hard to come by, some interesting new tidbits have seemingly emerged that hint at changes being made to the game behind the scenes based on feedback from fans.
It seems the protagonist of Konami's Silent Hill 2 remake, currently in development at Bloober Team, has received a quiet redesign or perhaps had a face-lift. It's unclear whether this change comes in response to fan feedback from the trailer shown during the State of Play showcase held earlier this year, the negative response to which Bloober subsequently blamed on Konami.
The upcoming remake of Silent Hill 2 has brought about a considerable change in the look of the main character, James Sunderland, as revealed in a new game icon on Steam.
