Rare has marked Earth Day by showing off its latest building, a sustainable workplace called Barn X.
The 1200 metre-squared building was built on Rare’s campus in Twycross, Leicestershire and has been certified LEED Gold sustainable building status, according to an official Microsoft news post.
The Xbox studio already has four barns, which in the past were used to house different development teams working on separate games.
Barn X, however, is designed to bring together teams from various projects who are working on similar elements, as reported byGamesIndustry.biz.
The building runs entirely on electricity, some of which is offset by 750 seuqe metres of solar panels located in a nearby field.
It also uses condensated water from chillers to help flush its toilets, and has a pitched roof which contains advanced cooling and ventilation systems.
Its external cladding timber is New Zealand Acoya. While this had to be flown over, which naturally isn’t too eco-friendly, Microsoft notes that this particular wood will last for 60 years without the need for any varnish or other sealer.
Barn X was also created with neurodiversity in mind, with staff able to adjust their individual desk lighting however they want, and numerous spaces available in the building for moments of calm or privacy.
According to the GI.biz article, Barn X will hold the teams working on Everwild, Sea of Thieves and Rare’s engines and services teams.
The other buildings will continue to be used for secret projects that other teams may not know about.
“Before we announced it, Sea of Thieves coming to PS5 was somewhat secret, and the easiest way to keep a secret is to put it behind a locked door,” studio boss Craig Duncan told GI.biz. “We created a key carded space in the bottom of Barn C for that. If we’re working on something secret, I can now create a space that keeps that team separate.
“That’s not what we’ve done with Barn X. Barn X will be the things that are going on that all the teams know about, because we want the space to be collaborative.”

The long-delayed Star Wars: Hunters finally has a new release date. Back in 2021, Lucasfilm Games and developer Zynga announced Star Wars: Hunters, a squad-based arena shooter set after the fall of the Galactic Empire at the end of the original Star Wars movie trilogy. Players can choose from characters like Rieve, a dark-side-empowered warrior, a lightsaber-wielding droid called J-3DI, and even Utooni, a pair of junk-scavenging Jawas stacked together. Each of these characters has their own unique abilities, which will come in handy during frantic battles across several classic Star Wars locations.

Back in March, TechCrunch broke the news that LinkedIn was quietly testing the waters for games on its platform — word and logic puzzles similar to Wordle. Now, in an effort to attract more users and increase engagement, the platform is launching three of those games officially.
An incredibly rare Nintendo DS is being auctioned off, and it could sell for over £15,000. The Nintendo DS was first released in 2004 as the successor to the Nintendo Game Boy Advance and evolved the Big N's classic handheld formula by including a second touchscreen that players could use for hit titles like The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Pokemon Black and White. While it was eventually phased out in favor of the upgraded Nintendo 3DS in 2011, the original Nintendo DS remains one of gaming’s most well-remembered portable systems, with several of its past exclusives being released on current hardware to this day.
Fallout 5 won't start development until after The Elder Scrolls 6 launches, so we're a long way off from the next numbered game in the series, but the Amazon show has ignited a newfound hype in the franchise. So, the question is whether a third party will develop a spin-off akin to Obsidian's New Vegas in the meantime.
Apple is finally taking some strict action on apps that claim to use AI technology to generate nude images of people who have not given their consent. Apple has removed at least three AI nude image generator apps who offered services like face swaps or ‘undressing' where AI was used to remove clothes in images of people. These deepfake apps gained popularity through Instagram ads. While Meta was quick to take down the ads redirecting users to download such apps, Apple took a while to respond. It was only after a report by 404 Media that Apple took steps.
In recent years, it’s become common for AAA games to hold back their New Game+ modes, often rolling them out as part of a “big update” weeks or months after launch. Well, apparently, that won’t be the case with the upcoming PS5 exclusive Stellar Blade, which will have New Game+ available from launch, and it sounds pretty meaty. In addition to tackling the game at a higher difficulty, players can look forward to learning new skills and earning a bunch of NG+ exclusive outfits for Eve (a hefty 34 all!) We have more details about NG+ below, but first, check out Stellar Blade’s stylish launch trailer.
No Rest for the Wicked's director has cited Baldur's Gate 3 and Hades 2 as examples of how early access launches can be fantastic, and said releasing in early access is "one of the best decisions we could've made."

It feels a little odd to say Barbie is back as the iconic doll never really went away. Introduced to the world in 1959, people have been playing with and collecting Barbies ever since. There's no doubting the spotlight Barbie was thrust back into in 2023 thanks to her first live action movie though, and naturally, Mattel has been trying to ride that wave ever since. The latest manifestation of that is a brand new Barbie collection dubbed Mini BarbieLand which has shrunk Barbie, her friends, and the world around her down to a far smaller size.
