Developer Team Ninja has updated the PS5 store page for its upcoming open-world action title Rise of the Ronin, offering more details on the various factions that are part of the game’s story and setting of the Bakumatsu era.
Rise of the Ronin will feature three distinct factions at play: Sabaku, Tobaku and Obei. The Sabaku is a faction of those loyal to the Tokugawa shogunate, and are looking to maintain its centralised rule over Japan. It is headed up by chief minister Naosuke Ii—feared as the “Red Demon of Ii”—and famed geisha of the Miyozaki pleasure district in Yokohama Taka Murayama.
Heading up efforts against the shogunate is the Tobaku faction, which is headed up by Ryoma Sakamoto and Kogoro Katsura. Like a Dragon: Ishin! players will recognise Sakamoto as a former Tosa clan ronin skilled in sword play as well as the use of Western-styled pistols. He is joined by Choshu clan retainer Kogoro Katsura, who is known for his level-headed and cautious approach.
The third major faction in Rise of the Ronin is the face of the Western forces, Obei, who are looking to open Japan up to foreign trade with the US and European powers. The Obei is headed up by US Navy commodore Matthew Perry, and British diplomat Rutherford Alcock.
Rise of the Ronin is slated for release on March 22, and will be coming exclusively to the PS5. The game is currently available for pre-order, and also has a Digital Deluxe Edition up for grabs.

A new report offers more clarity on the future of the Nintendo Switch 2, and the key piece of news that it delivers actually supports two major rumors about the upcoming console. Nintendo has generally kept quiet about plans for a Switch successor, but that hasn't stopped speculation from running wild for years. In more recent months, things have transitioned from more random conjecture to reasonably grounded analysis of reports about the console, which seems set to arrive in the near future despite the lack of any official announcement from Nintendo.

The Prince of Persia series made its grand return last week with The Lost Crown, an excellent Metroidvania that learns from and improves upon some of the genre’s best games. It’s got an entertaining story to boot, which plays around with the concept of timelines without defaulting to a contrived multiverse story like Mortal Kombat 1. All its time travel and frequent flashbacks can make the story hard to parse at times, though.

The company is reaching a deadline imposed by the EU under the Digital Markets Act, which requires the company to allow the installation of apps from outside the App Store. The company has until March 6 to implement the app sideloading, and iOS 17.4 appears to be the update that will bring the necessary changes.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is a strange blend. On one hand, it’s a good excuse to revisit Digital Trends’ 2020 Game of the Year selection. On the other, it’s a bizarre package filled with tone-deaf bonus modes that water down the base game’s own message on cyclical violence. Considering that it’s not as much of a “remaster” as its title implies, I wouldn’t blame most players for skipping it.
Story modes in sports games have had a long-standing problem. Scripted narratives clash with the “anything can happen” nature of sports, which means what happens in the actual games can be in direct opposition to what happens in the narrative.
