When discussing the conclusion to Rooster Teeth's long-running , the show's co-writer, director, and voice actor, Matt Hullum talked about the game franchise it started life as a machinima of: . has been around since the very first game, starting in 2003 a year before the release of, and so the team at Rooster Teeth has experienced the release of every game both as fans and using the titles to create their content.
As comes to an end after 21 years with the feature-length, Hullum spoke in an exclusive interview with Screen Rant about what he would like to see from the series going forward as a fan. As well as expressing a fondness for all of the games in the series, with as a personal favorite, Hullum also compared the franchise to another sci-fi icon,, saying:
While the themes in Halo and most of the characters have been directly inspired by the games, there are many changes to the overall story and lore.
While the main stories in the series have focused on John 117, also known as Master Chief, there have been other titles without the iconic Spartan at the forefront. As pointed out by Hullum, the last game made by Bungie, told the story of Noble Six during the Fall of Reach, 20 days before the series' first title . Bungie also put players in control of an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper during the events of in 's story to give yet another perspective on the game's universe.
Both and were well-received by players and critics, getting 91 and 83 scores on Metacritic, respectively.
This would be similar to the various spin-offs such as, ,, and the upcoming video game, which all take place outside of the main episodes that form the. These titles further explore different corners of the universe and offer perspectives that aren't those of the Jedi, but rather fellow rebels, bounty hunters, and outlaws that inhabit the same worlds around those events.
With these parallels in mind, Hullum's comments would make a lot of sense for the future of the franchise and could provide even more worldbuilding outside of Master Chief's story, especially with fans' criticism surrounding some of the directions the series has taken with this narrative, following what could have been a strong finale for him in . Regardless of what comes next, Hullum stated that he would be "" following 's satisfying finale in .
