The Pokemon-style RPG Cassette Beasts is getting a major new update, adding online multiplayer and a host of other interesting features later this year. UK-based developer Bytten Studio and prolific indie publisher Raw Fury released Cassette Beasts on Windows and Linux computers last April, with a wider launch on Xbox systems and the Nintendo Switch the following month. Just like Pokemon, Cassette Beasts tasks players with collecting different elementally empowered creatures, although these monsters are stored within old-fashioned audio cassette tapes and summoned using a handheld cassette player.
Cassette Beasts was met with favorable reviews when it first launched, with many proclaiming it to be one of the best games of its genre and an evolution of the tried-and-true monster-taming formula that might actually be better than the more recent Pokemon entries. In addition to providing a colorful open world to explore and a wide assortment of monsters to capture, train, and battle with, Cassette Beasts features a local co-op mode that allows a friend to tag along for the journey and fight in 2v2 match-ups.
Players will soon be able to challenge their online friends in Cassette Beasts, as publisher Raw Fury has just announced a new update that will add new multiplayer support and plenty of other features. This update will launch on May 20 and is free for all available platforms. Players will be able to trade Cassette Beasts with their friends online, as well as embark on co-op raids. A free multiplayer beta test is being held for the Steam version of Cassette Beasts starting on March 25.
Online co-op isn’t the only new feature coming to Cassette Beasts with this new update. Crossplay support is being added across all platforms, meaning that Steam players will be able to explore the island of New Wirral with their friends on the Switch and vice versa. Additionally, Raw Fury is launching an iOS and Android version of Cassette Beasts sometime later this year. Cassette Beasts will also have a crossover with last year’s Moonstone Island, with some cosmetic options inspired by that game being included in the upcoming free update and Pombomb being added to Moonstone Island.
While Cassette Beasts flew somewhat under the radar when it launched last year, its player base has grown to over 400,000 players. These players will soon be able to interact with each other online across different platforms thanks to May’s Cassette Beasts update, which currently has a free multiplayer beta test available for anyone looking to try the game out.
