If there were any lingering doubts about the multi-device future of PlayStation, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida dispelled them in a video interview with the Norges Bank Investment Management. The executive said PlayStation would remain on console, but the gaming experience will be expanded to PC, mobile, and cloud.
In short, it will be ubiquitous. Wherever there is computing, users will be able to play their favorite games seamlessly. Gamers will be able to find a place to play in different spaces. While PlayStation will remain our core product, we will expand our gaming experiences to PC, mobile, and Cloud.
We've already seen several PC ports of former PlayStation exclusives, of course. They began with Horizon Zero Dawn in August 2020, then Predator: Hunting Grounds and Days Gone in April and May 2021, God of War in January 2022, Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered in August 2022, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection and Sackboy: A Big Adventure in October 2022, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales in November 2022, Returnal in February 2023, The Last of Us Part I in March 2023, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in July 2023. The next on the line are Helldivers 2, which is launching on the same day as the PlayStation 5 version since it is a live service game, and Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition. Sadly, there's still no word on Ghost of Tsushima.
Sony has also been planning to expand its PlayStation franchises to mobile. They acquired mobile developer Savage Game Studios for that purpose. As for the cloud, they've released the PlayStation Portal device, although that's just for Remote Play usage of existing console games.
In the aforementioned interview, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida also explained why he believes subscriptions won't necessarily take off like they did in the video streaming industry:
Well, we do subscription business model. At the same time, people usually play one game at the time, so an all-you-can-eat type of many games may not be so valuable compared with video streaming services. We have kind of balanced a hybrid service on PlayStation Network: subscription as well as paid content.
The most recent data does seem to indicate subscription growth to have largely stalled in the gaming industry.

It's time to play everybody's favourite game - no, not GTA 6, but the GTA 6 Release Date Quiz. Who's stepping up to the podium this time? Why, it's Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, who offered thoughts on the matter in a recent investor Q&A. Fingers on the buzzers, everybody!
Xbox Game Pass subscribers have yet another day one game to look forward to, as the upcoming Botany Manor has been confirmed for release on April 9. Botany Manor was first confirmed for Xbox Game Pass last December, with a handful of other 2024 Game Pass titles confirmed on the same day.
The January 25 Xbox Game Pass update is adding a new day-one title in the form of Go Mecha Ball. This hectic indie release promises to add to the already sizable collection of high-quality roguelike games on Xbox Game Pass.
Microsoft has announced that it will be laying off 1,900 members of its 22,000-person gaming division.
Enshrouded, the other notable survival game to be launching into early access this week, puts a soulslike spin on its combat. But while that might imply Fromsoft-style difficulty, players are already saying that it's too easy to live up to that comparison.
Sony has revealed the most downloaded PlayStation Store games of 2023.
Sony has its own subscription service, PlayStation Plus, but it's a far cry from what Xbox Game Pass has on offer. While PlayStation Plus focusses on showing off the best of Sony's backlog, Xbox games often hit Game Pass on day one. Despite this difference, it doesn't seem that Sony plans on changing its strategy anytime soon.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle revealed that Marios Gavrilis is playing the game's villain, Emmerich Voss. During the recent Xbox Developer Direct, MachineGames offered a look into the villain.
The Dial of Destiny was one of 2023’s biggest flops but, as many soon-to-be-dead Nazis have discovered, just because you knock Indiana Jones down doesn’t mean he’s out of the count. Wolfenstein developer MachineGames has now unveiled Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which allow players to don that fedora and crack that whip.
Just days after its early access release, Pocket Pair’s Palworld has set another momentous milestone by surpassing Elden Ring’s and Cyberpunk 2077’s concurrent player count on Steam. While the title was not one of 2024’s anticipated games for some, it has surprisingly become a worldwide hit, quickly topping the charts.
By far, the biggest reveal at the second Xbox Developer Direct was Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The new first-person action/adventure game in development at MachineGames looked great in its first presentation and isn't too far off, either, since it is slated to launch later this year on PC and Xbox Series S|X.
