Payday 3 comes with a laundry list of decisions that players will have to answer quickly when walking into the next job. Mask off or on? Creep around corners and avoid armed confrontation or bust in guns blazing? Engage in a hostage negotiation to buy some time or power through as quickly as possible? After 10 years and more than 200 updates since the Payday gang infiltrated Washington, DC, and after acquiring a few new associates along the way, the crew is picking up where they left off and heading to the greater New York City metropolitan area for Payday 3 — even crossing the Hudson River for a sting in New Jersey. They may have learned a few more tricks of the trade, but it’s up to the player to utilize them effectively. And, more often than not, going in with the goal of pulling off a job under the radar ends in reluctantly busting out guns. One false move is all it takes to blow it.

Across years of updates and new missions, Payday 2 ultimately escalated to such a ridiculous degree that the gang broke into the White House to stole pre-signed Presidential pardons for themselves. It was good ridiculousness. Now Payday 3 is on its way, and the cooperative heisting looks far more down-to-Earth in a new trailer fresh out of Gamescom.
Payday 3 will see the gang return from their hard-earned retirement to rob New York City. Or in this case, New Jersey. They're at Port Jersey to steal quantum processors, sneaking around warehouses and stacks of shipping containers before the heist turns hot. This is hardly the most exciting setting but I suppose Starbreeze need to reset before they can resume escalating. By the end of Payday 3's DLC plans, I hope to be stealing Spacepresidential pardons from the Grey House on the Moon.

I had always wished pals would get into Payday. You can treat it like a Left 4 Dead-ish cooperative shooter with a crime theme (and it's a lovely-feeling shooter!), but the real joy is in keeping the cops from being called at all. Dodging patrols, disabling security, finding alternate routes, and controlling skittish civilians is such a thrill when you pull off a clever heist. But without crimefriends, I've always been at the mercy of matchmaking or bots. Maybe this time, eh chums?
Payday 3 is due to launch on the 21st of September via Steam and the Epic Games Store, priced at £35/€40/$40. It's also coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Xeriex XS.
I'm just glad to see this coming at all. For a while at the end of the last decade, Starbreeze were in serious financial trouble.

It may not be perfectly timed with the film’s release, but a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem game is in the works. Outright Games announced plans to launch what is essentially a sequel to the theatrical outing sometime in 2024. Specific platforms haven’t been revealed yet, but look for the Mutant Mayhem game to make its way to consoles and PC.
Payday 3 is Holding an Open Beta This Weekend on PC and Xbox Series X/S
After multiple delays, Payday 3 finally arrives this month, but if you just can’t wait to get your hands on the game, a free open beta is being held this weekend. The Payday 3 Technical Open Beta won’t require you to have pre-ordered the game – anybody on Steam or Xbox Series X/S can jump in (PS5 is excluded for whatever reason). Starbreeze does warn the beta build is from a few months back, so it doesn’t necessarily represent the final state of the game – the beta is more about testing the capacity of the Payday 3 servers.
