Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is Nintendo's second remake in the Mario RPG universe. However, despite seeming to be a niche game, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door was a phenomenon when it was released 20 years ago and is still considered one of the best GameCube games to date. Considering this achievement, it's understandable why it left the original Paper Mario behind to receive a remake first.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is the second game in the Paper Mario series. It features a turn-based system identical to its predecessor, with timed inputs strengthening attacks and defense and a 2D visual style that plays out inside a theater stage. Besides HD graphics and redesigned animations, the Switch version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will add new gameplay features that have yet to be announced.
Although Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is widely considered the best RPG starring Nintendo's mascot, it was succeeded by Super Paper Mario on the Wii, which had the highest sales in the franchise. Super Paper Mario transitioned from the classic turn-based combat system to a platforming and action gameplay and introduced an innovative dimension-flipping feature. With that in mind and observing Nintendo's history, it's clear that the developer will likely continue bringing new remakes of its old games to the Switch, especially considering that its successor's launch is allegedly more than one year away.
