The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has reportedly fired four employees in the aftermath of a major controversy surrounding the museum'sPokemon exhibition from last Fall. The worldwide popularity of Nintendo's iconic monster-catching franchise has seen the series honored in a variety of different manners since the games' 1996 debut. The series has regularly featured both digital and in-person exhibitions sharing the art and history of the franchise, including last year's «Pokemon Colors» exhibit in Yokohama. However, one of the most recent exhibitions has plenty of controversy attached.

You might think after more than a quarter of a century, Pokemon is running out of crossover ideas. You might also think that the out-there crossovers it does come with might not hit as hard as they used to. Wrong on both counts. Pokemon teamed up with the Netherlands' Van Gogh Museum in 2023, and the products available through it, particularly the Grey Felt Hat Pikachu promo card, caused a miniature riot in the museum's gift shop.

The rare and controversial Pikachu With Grey Felt Hat promo card is returning for a wider release among Pokemon players in the Netherlands in February 2024. Before this, this special card had been so scarce that scalpers were able to gouge its prices right outside the venue in which it was released, which is why completionist Pokemon players and collectors are all breathing a sigh of relief at this announcement.

Some Pokemon fans got a little over-excited last year when a collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam included a promotional, and very limited edition, Pikachu card. The art on the card includes Pikachu in a grey felt hat and had been modeled after Vincent Van Gogh's iconic self-portrait. Unfortunately, the chaos that ensued at the museum when the card first became available meant it was pulled and many others who wanted it were unable to find one short of paying through the nose on a resale site.

The Vincent Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam said Saturday it would no longer hand out a prized Pokemon card after the giveaway sparked crushes by "scalpers" reselling it for exorbitant prices. Launched with great fanfare last month to mark the museum's 50th anniversary, the collaboration with Pokemon aimed to inspire younger visitors and included exhibitions on the artist's links with Japan.

You'd think with more than 1,000 Pokemon created, and more being revealed all the time, simply turning each and every one of them into a plush would be good enough.
