Some Pokemon fans got a little over-excited last year when a collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam included a promotional, and very limited edition, Pikachu card. The art on the card includes Pikachu in a grey felt hat and had been modeled after Vincent Van Gogh's iconic self-portrait. Unfortunately, the chaos that ensued at the museum when the card first became available meant it was pulled and many others who wanted it were unable to find one short of paying through the nose on a resale site.
Between the issues at the museum and stock disappearing almost instantly online, it seemed any chance to get your hands on a Van Gogh Pikachu card in the conventional ways had long passed, but that might not be the case. According to Pokebeach, stores in the Netherlands have been given additional stock of the card to distribute to fans next month.
No official announcement has been made by Pokemon nor the stores that will have stock of the card. However, the report claims each of the stores has been given 100 additional Pikachu cards, although it's also unclear how many stores have been given cards so there's no indication of exactly how many cards might be out there. The cards will likely be distributed in mid-February and given to customers who spend 30 euros or more in-store.
Despite no announcement, news that there are hundreds more Pikachu Van Gogh cards out there ready to go has led to the price of the card on resale sites dropping. The card was selling for an average of $170 in November but has dropped to less than $150 and will likely continue to drop as more people discover more cards are coming. There's no news yet of the card being available outside of the Netherlands though, and until that happens, resale prices of what is ultimately a free card will likely remain pretty high.
The card might not be available on the Van Gogh Museum site again yet - and maybe ever - but that doesn't mean you can't own other items from the incredibly creative crossover range. A range of prints replacing elements from famous Van Gogh paintings with Pokemon is available, as well as t-shirts, journals, and tote bags with some of the Pokemon-tweaked paintings on them.
