If you're an MMORPG fan who's been waiting patiently for news of Riot Game's swing at the genre, then I'm afraid you'll probably have to wait quite a while longer. Riot co-founder Marc Merrill announced that the project has been "reset" and won't appear for "likely several years", with one of the main reasons being a "need to do something that truly feels like a significant evolution of the genre".

The League of Legends MMORPG, which Riot Games had been working on for quite some time, has seemingly had its development process reset. As spotted by VideoGamesChronicle, studio co-founder Marc Merrill elaborated on how the game’s development is going through a long thread on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

It's been over three years since Riot officially started working on the long-rumored League of Legends MMO. Back then, the team was led by former Age of Empires and World of Warcraft designer Greg Street, who has since left Riot to found his own studio and start another MMO project; for more about that, head to my lengthy interview with Greg.

Riot Games hasn’t said much about its upcoming MMO since announcing it in 2020. Co-chairman Marc Merrill confirmed on Wednesday that the game is still in development. However, Riot restarted the project “some time ago,” and the studio won’t have anything to share for “likely several years.”

Fans who have been patiently waiting for news about the development of the League of Legends MMO will be disheartened to learn that the game's development has been reset. Riot Games first teased the League of Legends MMO back in 2019, several months before announcing and releasing its popular first-person shooter, Valorant.

The new year continues to be a difficult one for the games industry, with Riot Games announcing layoffs affecting about 11% of their global workforce, or around 530 people. The company is also trimming its portfolio, shutting down Riot Forge, pulling back on some other projects, and recentering on its four core live titles: League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, Valorant, and Wild Rift.

Tencent Holdings' Riot Games plans to lay off 530 employees, or about 11 percent of its staff globally, the online gaming company said on Monday in a blog that included a letter to employees from CEO Dylan Jadeja.

Earlier today, Riot Games announced that it is eliminating 530 roles globally, which make up about 11 percent of its workforce. The company publicly delivered this devastating news in two separate posts — one for players, and another for «Rioters,» with the latter detailing severance package and some other benefits to treat the dismissed employees «with respect and grace.»
