It’s been frequently claimed that 2023 marked a renaissance for the fighting game genre, but more specifically, it was also a great year for solo fighting game players.

The developers of Tekken 8 have recently made some changes to online matchmaking, and players are reportedly having problems afterward. Earlier this year, Tekken 8 exploded onto the fighting game scene with a more “aggressive” gameplay style and a new story that continued the saga of Jin Kazama as he sought redemption by taking down his father, Kazuya Mishima. Initial reviews for Tekken 8 wereoverwhelmingly positive, and it quickly topped sales charts less than a month after its release.

Tekken 8’s latest update patch is now live, bringing with it a host of bug fixes and other quality-of-life improvements. The latest entry in the hard-hitting Tekken franchise was released back in January and has earned rave reviews thanks to its visual presentation and more “aggressive” gameplay. Tekken 8 marks a new chapter in the far-reaching Mishima family saga, as Jin Kazama returns to his earlier role as a hero and aims to take down his father Kazuya Mishima once and for all, while a large cast of supporting characters embarks on their own connected stories through intense, one-on-one battles.

An impressive collection of Tekken 8 mods gives characters like Kazuya Mishima, Jin Kazama, and Paul Phoenix their classic looks from the original PlayStation era — blocky polygon textures and all. Tekken 8 sees the return of many longtime Tekken fighters, all of whom sport updated designs and improved graphics thanks to Unreal Engine 5. Paul in particular has a noticeably different look from his last appearance in Tekken 7, with Tekken 8 swapping out his trademark high-top fade haircut for a more relaxed style that has garnered a mixed response from fans.

Tekken 8 has been a smash hit among gamers, at least according to a recently released financial report from Bandai Namco. Tekken 8’s storypicks up where 2015’s Tekken 7 left off, with Jin Kazama fully recovered from the events of past entries and ready to challenge his father Kazuya Mishima to determine the fate of the world. Gameplay-wise, Tekken 8 introduces new concepts like the Heat System and Tornado Hits, which help give matches a more “aggressive” feel than those of its predecessors. There are also different gameplay modes like the new Arcade Quest and the returning Tekken Ball to keep players coming back for more.

Tekken 8 is on its way, and fans now have a sneak peek of the upcoming game’s Achievement and Trophy list. The latest installment in the long-running Tekken franchise launches on Friday, January 26th, introducing new mechanics and four new characters.

Yet another returning character has been revealed for Tekken 8, with the tomb keeper Zafina ready to unleash an ancient evil upon her unlucky opponents. The next chapter of Bandai Namco’s hard-hitting 3D fighting franchise is now only a few weeks from release, and there has been plenty of inspired marketing during the run-up to Tekken 8. For example, Succession star Brian Cox recently appeared in a trailer recapping the Tekken story so far, reminding fans of the dark and twisted rivalry of the Mishima family and its three most prominent members ahead of Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama’s next epic clash.

Following the events of Tekken 7, the stage for Tekken 8’s story is set up to be perhaps the most over-the-top yet. In the six months since the defeat of Heihachi Mishima, his son, Kazuya Mishima, has installed a reign of terror over the planet using his devil powers. And while the setup is, quite frankly, a lot to take in, if the first four chapters I played are any indication, the level of spectacle and bombast reaches new levels in Tekken 8’s Story Mode.

Tekken 8’s final launch roster has been confirmed with the addition of newcomer Reina, one of three brand-new fighters coming in Tekken 8. She may have a very important role in its story, because she appears to be yet another illegitimate child of series jerk Heihachi Mishima, quite possibly the worst dad in fighting game history.

This year is shaping up to have a killer line-up of fighting games between the launches of Mortal Kombat 1 and Street Fighter 6, but unfortunately, Tekken 8 won’t be completing the holy trinity as it just got a new release date: January 26th 2024.
