Telltale Games allegedly laid off several staff members at the beginning of September, according to former cinematic artist Jonah Huang. Huang said on X that the developer laid off “most of us” and specified that he couldn’t speak about the status of The Wolf Among Us 2, the project on which he was working, due to a non-disclosure agreement.

The studio's first original IP in 25 years, Starfield, as director Todd Howard puts it, is essentially Skyrim in space. Hundreds of hours of spacefaring adventure await, with a side helping of nostalgic Bethesda style. The game is out now on PC and Xbox Series S/X. It's also a big month for RPGs, as CD Projekt Red's much-awaited Cyberpunk 2077 expansion hits the shelves on September 26. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty promises a ton of upgrades from the base game, including an overhauled skill tree, a new wanted system, and gameplay tweaks. There's a brand new story, too, with Idris Elba joining the cast, and Keanu Reeves returning.

Paper Beast will be making the jump from PS4 and PSVR to PS5 and PSVR2 next month in an Enhanced Edition which bundles in new improvements. Out on 27th September 2023, the new version will sport a smooth locomotion mode in VR and all-around HDR support, and outside of it, there'll be a 4K resolution. Textures have also been updated while the sandbox will contain more creatures and plants.

PSVR2 hit C-Smash VRS will receive a huge overhaul on 14th September 2023 that adds new modes, more than 40 new stages, and a host of other features in a free update. The big highlight is an Infinity mode, which as the name suggests, tasks you with keeping the ball in play for as long as possible while avoiding oncoming hazards. You can then take the mode online in two-player co-op, as detailed in the trailer above.

September is a massive month for Game Pass with the day-one release of Bethesda’s Starfield, but there are plenty more games coming to the subscription service soon.

PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers’ free games for September 2023 are Saints Row, Black Desert: Traveler Edition, and Generation Zero, Sony announced on Wednesday. Players may download the trio of PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games beginning Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Amazon Games announced the first Western technical test for Throne and Liberty, the upcoming MMORPG developed by NCSoft.

Throne and Liberty will be getting an official technical test starting on September 19th. The invite-only test will let some players step into the global build of NCSOFT’s new MMO, which is published by Amazon.

Sony has yet to announce the free titles coming to PlayStation Plus Essential (and Extra/Premium) subscribers in September 2023. We thought the Analogue Pocket was "the best way to relive the golden era of handheld gaming" when we reviewed it. But we'll bet our 10-year-old selves would love the special edition version coming out next month even more. The company is launching a glow-in-the-dark handheld called Pocket Glow, which the company says will be available in "highly limited quantities" for $250 each. It will be available for sale starting on September 1st, 8AM PDT/11AM EDT, and it will be in stock and begin shipping on September 5th. 

SEGA and Sonic Team have been doing a pretty great job with Sonic Frontiers. The open zone platformer has been receiving a steady flow of updates and DLC, filling out the game with new things to see and do. The latest effort, called The Final Horizon, is very nearly here, releasing on 28th September, and it'll be free for everyone who owns the game.

Bandai Namco's theme park management sim, Park Beyond, didn't exactly set the world on fire when it launched back in June. While the game's focus on larger-than-life rides is a neat hook, it's unfortunately full of technical problems that leave the experience feeling undercooked. However, developer Limbic Entertainment is far from done, with a major game update queuing up for arrival on 29th September.

2023 has been a good year so far for Samsung, as new devices have earned praise from users. In February, the South Korean giant launched its flagship S23 series, including the top-end Galaxy S23 Ultra, which has again been termed as the best Android smartphone for 2023. GameMill announced NASCAR Arcade Rush in June, and had a few screenshots to show off then – but no video. Netflix has revealed that Castlevania: Nocturne will be out on September 28. A spin-off of its previous Castlevania anime, it takes place in Revolutionary France. It seems like this new series is loosely based on the game Rondo of Blood, and features Richer Belmont—a descendant of the previous series' protagonists.

ANONYMOUS; CODE is the sixth and most recent entry in the excellent Science Adventure series of surreal (and often extremely bleak) Japanese visual novels.
