PlayStation 5 outsold Xbox Series X/S by almost 3-to-1 this year, according to estimates from research firm Ampere Analysis.

Sony has been testing the waters with different hardware this year, including the PlayStation Portal and the PS VR2. In an interview with the Financial Times, Eric Lempel, the head of global business at Sony Interactive Entertainment, reveals how some of these projects have been faring.

It's been a strong year sales-wise for Sony, as the PlayStation 5 has now reportedly sold over 50 million units as it enters its fourth year on the market.

PS5's November 2023 was Sony's biggest November for PlayStation sales to date, Sony Interactive Entertainment's Head of Global Business has said.

Sony announced Wednesday that it has sold 50 million units of its PlayStation 5 console since the system launched three years ago. That puts the PS5 on pace with the PlayStation 4, which also hit the 50 million sales mark in 2016, just three years after Sony’s last-gen console launched in 2013.

After expecting “record-breaking sales” this holiday season, Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 has sold over 50 million units in its lifetime. According to The Financial Times, the company reported reaching that figure on December 9th, about 161 weeks after the console launched (the PS4 took 160 weeks).

Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed December’s 2023’s PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue and Classics titles.

Destiny 2 developer Bungie are staring down the barrel of a full Sony takeover if forthcoming expansion The Final Shape doesn’t meet sales expectations, according to several anonymous current and former employees. The same sources also claim that the studio are prepared to cut staff again to meet their financial obligations as a Sony subsidiary, having laid off a significant proportion of their workforce in November.

When PlayStation’s acquisition of Bungie was finalized last year, it happened under special circumstances for the latter in particular. Bungie has remained fully autonomous and continues to function as an independent subsidiary under Sony’s ownership, though it seems the studio might be under threat of losing that special status, as per a report published by IGN.

However, since being acquired by Sony, Bungie’s situation seems to be dire. There is a new report from IGN that spoke with several developers within the company. Wishing to remain anonymous, we only have reports to provide, and if they are to be believed, Sony could very well take total control of Bungie in the future. 

One month after a major round of layoffs impacted roughly 100 Bungie employees of 1,200, those remaining at the Destiny developer say the cuts, as well as other cost-cutting measures, came alongside an apparent scramble by studio leadership to avoid a total Sony takeover.
