Finally, all those little dumpy Crewmates from Among Us can start shaking their asses on Twitch again. CEO Dan Clancy announced changes to the platform’s Community Guidelines on Wednesday, allowing cute animated emotes where characters shake their butts and twerk will be allowed on the platform.

Twitch has been testing a discovery feed for livestreams and Clips on mobile since last year, in hopes of giving users a new way to find new streamers to follow and, hence, spend more time on the platform. Now, the website has announced that it's rolling out the feature to all users later this month. The feed will first appear as a new tab in the mobile app and will allow viewers to switch between a scrollable feed for livestreams and another one for Clips. Like their names imply, the live feed will show users broadcasts from people they already follow and ongoing streams from people they don't based on their watch history. Meanwhile, the Clips feed will be filled with short snippets from live broadcasts.

After a nasty 2023 for games industry labor, 2024 is off to a similar start. We already saw significant layoffs at Twitch last year, and now there’s even more grim news ahead, as the Amazon-owned platform is letting 35% of its staff go.

Amazon-owned Twitch have announced that they will lay off "just over 500" people - almost 35% of their workforce - in the course of on-going plans to "rightsize our company", with CEO Dan Clancy conceding that the streaming service has been operating based on "where we optimistically expect our business to be in 3 or more years, not where we're at today."

Amazon-owned streaming platform Twitch is laying off more than 500 people in a move designed to “rightsize” the company, according to CEO Dan Clancy. Bloomberg first reported the news Tuesday, which is when many employees learned about the impending layoffs — a day before Wednesday’s official announcement.

Live-streaming service Twitch is reportedly planning to make huge cuts to its workforce with around 500 members of staff expected to be affected, according to Bloomberg. 

Amazon has revealed plans to fire 500 more Twitch employees, in a freewheeling spiral for what once seemed to be the monopolist of the live streaming business.

In December, Twitch relaxed its rules to allow for "artistic depictions of nudity" in streams—things like «content that ‘deliberately highlighted breasts, buttocks or pelvic region,’»—as long as it was labelled as containing «sexual themes.» Two days later, following «community concern,» it chickened out and walked the changes back: «Moving forward, depictions of real or fictional nudity won't be allowed on Twitch, regardless of the medium,» CEO Dan Clancy said.

Twitch very quickly rolled back its recent updates to its sexual content policy. On Dec. 15, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy reverted some of its new rules — specifically the ones concerning “artistic nudity” on the platform. Artists initially excited about the policy told Polygon they’re confused and disappointed by the rollback.

Twitch has taken back a rule change it made just two days ago. After seeing what some streamers did with the freedom to stream «artistic depictions of nudity,» the site said it «went too far.»

Twitch will officially be closing down services in South Korea at the beginning of next year due to high operating costs. 

Despite being one of the biggest streaming platforms in the world, Twitch has more than its share of problems. Recently, the company announced 180 employees were being laid off, and now it’s having to cease operations in Korea.

2023's games industry jobapocalypse continues with news that Amazon Games are laying off 180 people. This includes the entirety of the Twitch service Crown Channel, plus its Game Growth division. According to Amazon themselves, it's all with a view to refocussing on Prime Gaming, which serves up games to Amazon Prime subscribers.

It's dropping the controversial Hype Chat feature it brought in back in June this year, which allowed people to spend anywhere from $1 to $500 to get their chat messages pinned—in dazzling technicolour—to the top of a streamer's chat box for a variable period of time.
