Season 7 of Battlefield 2042, titled Turning Point, will be its last, as reported by EA today in a new blog post. In preparation for production on the next entry to the Battlefield franchise, the dev team will be prioritizing the future—though Battlefield 2042 will still be getting some updates and events going forward.

It has been a bittersweet week for fans of EA's Battlefield 2042, as the developer DICE not only releasing a seventh season, but confirming that the game is quickly approaching its end. With how bad the game's launch was in 2021, most fans probably didn't expect it to last as long as it did, but Battlefield 2042 improved over time, fixing the various issues and continued adding new features and content to help the game reach new heights while fostering a bigger community.

The Battlefield series increasingly seems like a square peg held by a publisher that only owns round holes. Created by EA Dice, overseen now by Respawn CEO Vince Zampella, recently worked on by EA's founded-and-shuttered Ridgeline Studios, and now EA Motive are the latest to be stuck with the beleaguered milsim.

Battlefield 2042 didn’t go the way EA would have hoped it would, with the first-person shooter having failed to perform as well as it was expected to from both critical and commercial perspectives. Nonetheless, developer DICE has been keeping up support for the title, having released plenty of updates and new content over the course of seven post-launch seasons- though going forward, the studio says it’ll be shifting focus away from the game.

Electronic Arts is adding Motive Studio, the team behind Star Wars: Squadrons and the 2023 remake of Dead Space, to the roster of developers working on the next Battlefield game. Byron Beede, general manager for the Battlefield franchise, and Patrick Klaus, general manager of Motive, announced the formation of a Battlefield-focused team at Motive on Tuesday — an announcement that also signaled the end of seasonal content for Battlefield 2042.

EA has confirmed that Battlefield 2042's Season 7 will be its last, as its development teams shift focus to the series' future. This marks the end of Battlefield 2042's long journey following its controversial launch, although fans can still expect to see some new content later on in the game.

EA’s wider multi-studio Battlefield team has gone through some significant disruptions of late, with Ridgeling Games – the studio that was established to create narrative-driven Battlefield experiences – having been shuttered. Prior to that, EA announced that Need for Speed and Burnout developer Criterion Games had joined that larger team, and now, another notable studio has been added to that list.

EA Motive, the studio behind 2023’s excellent Dead Space remake, confirmed that the next Battlefield game is in development and that it will assist with its development. Unfortunately, work on that new game also means that seasonal updates for Battlefield 2042 will cease after the conclusion of Season 7: Turning Point.

Electronic Arts has announced that it’s laying off roughly 670 people, and as you might imagine, a number of studios owned by the company are set to be impacted. One of the more severe cases is Ridgeline Games, which is being shuttered entirely. This follows the studio’s head and narrative director Marcus Lehto recently announcing his departure.

When EA revealed that it was adopting a new multi-studio development model for the Battlefield franchise in 2021, it confirmed that Ripple Effect Studios – previously DICE LA – was at work on a “new” Battlefield “experience”. But with DICE and Ridgeline Games currently working on the series’ next mainline instalment (which is allegedly due out in October 2025), what should we expect from how Ripple Effect’s game will fit into the picture?

Criterion Games of Need for Speed fame is working on the Battlefield series. Franchise boss Vince Zampella released a statement announcing that the team would join EA Entertainment for the same.

Electronic Arts has been working on many things recently, and not all of it has been simple. They’re not just making games right now. They’re trying to restructure their company and outlook so they can focus on making the best games possible. To that end, they have decided to merge the team from Criterion Games into the grander fold of EA Entertainment. What does that mean? Simply put, they will be put into the larger umbrella of EA titles, with the team now apparently focusing on the Battlefield franchise. EA released a statement about this today on is website and had this to say about the new merger:

Criterion Games, developer of titles such as Burnout and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, has formally joined EA Entertainment, according to a press release written by EA’s Vince Zampella. Criterion has been an EA studio since it was acquired in 2004, but it will now be primarily working on the Battlefield franchise.

The studio's first objective: improving the contemporary-set Battlefield 2042, which our Ed Thorn described as "an FPS package that has its fun moments, but one that's blighted by performance issues" back in 2021.
