It’s hard to believe that it’s almost been a year since the premiere of HBO’s live-action adaptation of Naughty Dog’s classic title, The Last of Us. There was a lot of worry and hope about this TV series because the video game is hailed as one of the best ever made and has one of the greatest stories ever told. On the flip side, video game adaptations were still hit-or-miss leading up to its premiere. But not only did it knock it out of the ballpark, but The Last of Us Season 2 was approved pretty quickly. However, due to the writer’s and actors’ strike, production on Season 2 was halted.

More than a few TV and film adaptations of video games have impressed in recent years, and in that group, few have scaled the sort of heights that HBO’s The Last of Us did last year. So successful was the show’s first season that shortly after its premiere, a second one was officially greenlit, and though reports have previously pegged it for a 2025 premiere, a specific release date has remained elusive.

HBO created a lot more The Last of Us fans with its super successful TV adaptation. The first season launched last year, finding a huge audience and critical acclaim, and the second series is now in production, heading to screens in 2025. Now, the company has provided our very first look at official shots from the anticipated new season:

The 75th Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on January 15, and that's where a majority of the awards winners will be announced. However, the Creative Arts Emmy awards, a subset of of the Emmys that recognizes technical achievements, guest appearances, and more, have already been doled out, and HBO's The Last of Us picked up eight wins, as reported by Deadline. There was a massive resurgence with The Last of Us thanks to the HBO live-action adaptation. Naughty Dog’s video game was already a cinematic experience for players. So, it likely wasn’t too challenging to adapt the video game into its own series. Still, for those who enjoyed the season, it’s been a waiting game to see when season two will begin production. Fortunately, we know the season production is coming, and already one leading start can’t wait to get back into the heavy stunt work required for the next season.

According to Los Angeles Magazine contributor Jeff Sneider, Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart, Dear Evan Hansen, Last Man Standing) is in talks to play Abby in the second series of HBO's The Last of Us.

The Last of Us season 2 will reportedly begin filming in early 2024. As per the FTIA production list, the second chapter is slated to shoot from January 7, 2024, onwards. The shooting schedule was delayed due to the Hollywood actors' and writers' strikes — both of which have ended now. Considering the show was not mentioned in HBO's 2024 slate, we can assume it will be out sometime in 2025 at the soonest. This is a bit off course from what lead Bella Ramsey — who played Ellie in season 1 — suggested, at a time when there were murmurs of a potential strike. It goes without saying that the series will adapt the events from the gory and polarising sequel, The Last of Us Part II, with plans for the arc from the video game to play out for longer than a season.

Naughty Dog has been pretty quiet on the gaming front this year, though the HBO series continues to be popular. According to Production List, filming for season 2 is scheduled to begin on January 7 next year.
