When Overwatch 2 launched back in 2022, the franchise switched to a free-to-play model, and as you might expect, there have been some complaints about how Blizzard has chosen to monetize the game. One sticking point has been the fact that in order to access new Heroes, you either have to buy the premium version of the most recent seasonal battle pass (which costs $10) or complete a number of hero challenges, which takes time. This kind of setup isn’t unheard of in a live-service game, but in a game like Overwatch where character balance is such a major focus, locking some folks who don’t want to pay out of using a new character for a certain amount of time has been a bone of contention.
Well, it seems that’s about to change. On a recent episode of the Group Up! Podcast, Overwatch 2 executive producer Jared Neuss stated Blizzard is “actively working toward” a new system that will allow everyone to play as a new Hero from Day 1…
“Would I like for every single player to be able to experience a Hero the day that a season drops? Yes. Do I think we'll get there? Yes, I do think that we'll get there. We're actively working towards it right now. Can I talk about the details? No, I can't. I recognize it's an issue and something that we definitely do want to address in the game, because we're not actively hitting that first goal.
Part of it is also just us making sure we're balancing that we're free to play with fairness. So, yes, it's like, obviously you can earn every Hero [in game], you don't have to buy them, but like you said, there's this period of time where... does a team have a competitive advantage? That's one of the reasons why we want to change our model going forward. Because it doesn't feel great in a game like this, that's so dependent on Heroes, to hold people back.”
How this new system would work, remains to be seen. There’s always give and take in a live service game, so if new Heroes become available to everyone upon launch, then Blizzard will likely look to make that up somewhere else.
Overwatch 2 can be played on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and Switch. The game’s annual Winter Wonderland event kicks off tomorrow (December 19) with the usual array of festive modes and skins.

Thank your own personal deity—possibly Kaheva the Blacksmith—it's Friday! This is gonna be a short intro because I'm far too busy smashing through review code of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. I'm only three hours in so far, which is about as deep as I was allowed to go during my recent hands-on (and my positive impressions of that experience have not changed, obviously). Anyway... stay safe, save often, and catch you Monday!
Apple may have crossed the $3 trillion valuation mark this year, making it the most valuable company in the world, but that does not mean the California-based firm had the most successful run in 2023 because other technology giants outperformed it by quite a fair margin. In fact, according to the latest report, Apple suffered its longest revenue slide in 22 years, with several challenges expected to make attempts at its growth in 2024.
As 2023 comes to an end, cybercrime has become a critical issue. Insomniac Games, the famed developer of Marvel's Spider-Man and its sequel Spider-Man 2 became the latest victim of a lack recently. Nearly 1.6TB of information including developer builds of the upcoming Marvel's Wolverine, timeline of upcoming games, as well as personal data of employees were put online by hackers. While this hack was shocking, it isn't the only one suffered by a major gaming developer in recent years. Just last year, Rockstar Games was hacked and 90 early development videos of GTA 6 were leaked online. Sometime later, it was concluded that a teen was behind the hack, and now he has been sentenced to life in hospital prison.

I’m not shy about hating the holiday season. Valrhona dark chocolate smells good when it’s melted with milk, and my heart glows when ornaments leave sugar-sized glitter in my palm, but there’s nothing else in it for me. The sun sets around 4:30 p.m. in New York, and I can no longer tell if the rot under my windowsill is lamb over rice or chicken. My family is abnormal (let’s leave it at that). But I’m getting bored of my yearly misery.
In Flesh and Blood’s latest expansion, Heavy Hitters, the trading card game introduces a brand-new hero named Betsy. Set against the backdrop of a fight club known as Rathe’s Death Match Arena, few competitors elicit the kind of fear and respect that she does. While other fighters have come and gone over the years, Betsy was born to this life — raised in the arena’s shadows. She embodies the determination, hedonism, and excitement that make its gladiatorial spectacle the only place where combatants can be guaranteed to win big or lose it all. Those odds are an excellent match for her signature mechanic, called wager, which invites players to bet against their opponents for increasingly complex and rewarding combat encounters.
