NISA announced today that a new adventure is starting next year in The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak. Set in the aftermath of a brief war, Calvard is enjoying a prosperous time of economic growth. But game settings remain boring if the good times are uninterrupted, and this prosperous time feels threatened as the public grows wary over the large influx of immigrants as questionable political reform takes hold. Players will control a spriggan by the name of Van Arkride. He is a professional that dwells underground, making ends meet by taking jobs legitimate sources can’t accept. Owing allegiance to no one, he will take on work from any client whether it be a in the role of detective, negotiator or bounty hunter.
The year is S.1208 and Van Arkride’s life is about to take an interesting turn. A prim and proper young lady wearing the uniform of an esteemed academy knocks on the door for ‘Arkride Solutions Office in the Old town district of Edith, the nation’s capitol. She offers a case to him that will change not only change his fate but can also shape the fate of the entire nation. Van Arkride will now have to explore the Calvard Republic in a rich story driven adventure. Filled with both action and intrigue, Van Arkride will be spriggan to action as the game seamlessly transitions between the action field and turn based combat with a revamped Action Time Battle system with an expanded arsenal thanks to new Shard Skills, courtesy of the sixth generation combat orbment Xipha. Under the new Alignment system the player’s choices and actions will affect how the story unfolds. Whether a servant of the law and order or an agent of chaos, one’s choices in these realms can influence one’s standing in the city, what available dialog options are present and who will oppose the player and who is a potential ally. The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak is scheduled for release in summer 2024 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Switch.
In addition to the announcement of Trails Through Daybreak, NISA announced that the critically acclaimed The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III and The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV will be coming to PlayStation 5 in early 2024. Following the Erebonian Civil war, Rean Schwarzer has taken his post as the newly appointed instructor at Thors Military Academy’s branch campus. Rean must adjust to his new life and duties it entails while preparing the next generation of heroes for oncoming threats. The two games will be bundled as a single collection and will include bonus cosmetic DLC to insure the party members are looking their best.

It always warms my heart to see an obscure Japanese game get a 2nd lease on life. While NIS America has been slowly localising every entry in the exhaustively long-running and interconnected Trails RPG series, there was a PSP spinoff back in 2012 that never got an English release. For as much as fans of Trails and Ys and the Nihon Falcom catalogue can appreciate a niche hit, even The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails seems to have been passed by and ignored by most people. Now that it has an official English release across multiple platforms, I can’t understand why this game wasn’t a cult classic – it’s fast-paced, full of content, endearingly written, and easily one of my favorite Nihon Falcom games.
When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare comes up, many players’ minds immediately jump to 00’s memories of lobbying up with close friends. For Modern Warfare III, developers Sledgehammer, Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Raven Software come together to deliver an updated FPS experience with all the illustrious nostalgic magic we remember, but with enough innovative features to make it feel new.
Intel threw a lot of information at us a couple of weeks ago at its Intel Innovation 2023 event in San Jose, California. The company talked a lot about its manufacturing advances, its Meteor Lake chip, and its future schedule for processors. It felt like a heavy download of semiconductor chip information. And it piqued my interest in a variety of ways.
Known as Kuro no Kiseki in Japan, publisher NIS America has confirmed that it'll be bringing the RPG westwards in the summer of 2024. Its official English name is Trails through Daybreak, and it's coming to both PS5 and PS4.
NIS America will re-release excellent JRPGs Trails of Cold Steel 3 and Trails of Cold Steel 4 as a PS5 duology in 'early 2024'. The two games are currently available separately on PS4, but the publisher now has a history of porting Falcom titles to Sony's current-gen console. Ys 8 and Ys 9 are two such examples.
Netflix has announced the Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft animated series, based on the Tomb Raider video game series. It is produced by Legendary with Crystal Dynamics.
Giant statues broadcasting a mysterious code, monks telling me to open my throat chakra, an ominous symbol added to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and now: a laptop displaying ancient Slavic text dropped into a middle of a landfill and a Johnny Silverhand-themed Wolfenstein 3D clone that unlocks a secret server farm. This is a side of Cyberpunk 2077 I never knew existed, FF:06:B5.
Earlier today, I reported that The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki was finally getting an English localization. Titled Trails through Daybreak, I picked out a talking point from the NISA announcement stream that Trails through Daybreak would be the start of a new story arc, and therefore serve as a decent entry point for new fans. Little did I know that I stepped on a landmine with this comment.
Two of Falcom’s The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel RPGs are about to find a new home. NIS America announced plans to bring Trails of Cold Steel III and Trails of Cold Steel IV to PlayStation 5. Those looking for a new platform for these will be able to pick up the two-in-one collection in early 2024.
As indicated by recent ESRB ratings, NIS America will bring The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 3 and The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 4 to PS5 in early 2024. They’ll be available separately on the PlayStation Store and physically as a two-in-one pack. Check out the announcement trailer below.
