Nintendo recently shared their earnings for the third quarter of their 2024 fiscal year (which runs from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024) and, as we reported, it was a good three months for the company with the Switch inching closer to edging out the PS2 as the best-selling console ever. Overall, the first three quarters of FY2024 have set a record for the company, with them bringing in ¥408 billion (or about $2.8 billion). But what about what comes next?
Rumors have been running rampant that Nintendo’s successor to the Switch will arrive sometime this year, and just the cadence of their publishing seems to indicate that’s the case, but if you were hoping for any news during this earnings briefing… no dice. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa kept his lips sealed about what might be coming down the pipeline.

That said, Furukawa did provide a hint about when we might learn more. While Furukawa said the Switch will continue to be the company’s “main business” as we head into 2024, he said Nintendo’s plan for the next fiscal year will be shared as part of their next Q4 2024 earnings briefing. Again, FY2024 wraps up on March 31 and, typically, Nintendo has reported their Q4 earnings in May. So, one way or another, it seems like we’ll probably have some sort of confirmation about the Switch 2 by then.
As for what to actually expect from that Q4 earnings briefing, I suspect we’re not going to get a big Switch 2 reveal before then. What we likely will get during the earnings briefing is an official confirmation that new hardware is coming in 2024 and perhaps a few more details, with a full reveal to come sometime during the summer. Of course, that’s just my own speculation based on years of covering Nintendo. Perhaps the company will surprise me.
Meanwhile, there are rumors we will be getting a Nintendo Direct sometime next week. This probably won’t be the big Switch 2 reveal, but rather, a look at some of the last Switch titles before Nintendo turns their attention toward their new hardware.
How do you think Nintendo is going to handle the Switch successor reveal? Will we have to wait until May to hear anything or is something happening sooner?

It’s widely expected Nintendo will launch a successor to the Switch in the first quarter of next year and one of the biggest questions surrounding the new hardware is, what are they going to use for storage? The Switch allows you to use pretty much any old microSD card as long as it has a transfer speed of at least 60 MB/s, but if Nintendo aims to bring their games more up to modern standards, that’s probably not going to cut it anymore. That said, the M.2 NVMe SSDs used in next-gen consoles and the Steam Deck may be too hot and power-hungry if Nintendo aims to stick to the slim Switch form factor with their next hardware, so what do they do?
Today was Pokémon Day, marking the release of the original Game Boy titles in Japan, and Nintendo and The Pokémon Company used the occasion to reveal what’s coming next for the franchise. The big news was the announcement of the next major core entry in the series, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which won’t be coming until 2025. This means 2024 will be the first year in a long time without any new console Pokémon game, although fans may not actually be that upset by that, as many have been urging Game Freak to take more time with their games following the messy launch of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
Since being announced back in 2021, there have been a lot of questions about what Assassin’s Creed Infinity would even be. We've known Infinity would be a hub of sorts that connects other Assassin’s Creed experiences and includes online elements, but beyond that, things have remained sketchy. Well, we now have some more details from insider Tom Henderson, who has a very good track record when it comes to all things Ubisoft. According to Henderson, he’s laid eyes on demo footage of Assassin’s Creed Infinity, and, surprise surprise, it sounds like it will be a heavily live-service-focused product.
After many years of development and countless delays, Skull and Bones has finally arrived, and if you want to rise through the pirate ranks, you’ll need to brush up on your naval combat. Ship battles in Skull and Bones are a bit different compared to earlier Ubisoft games like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, but don’t worry, we have some tips that should turn your into a terror of the high seas in no time…
Last week, on the heels of rampant rumors and speculation, Microsoft announced that while they aren’t porting their biggest games like Starfield to other platforms, they would be bringing four slightly lower-profile games to the competition. At the time, Phil Spencer wouldn't say what these games were, but as of today we now know three of the four. During the latest Nintendo Direct it was announced Grounded and Pentiment are coming to Switch, and now we know Hi-Fi Rush is coming to PS5.
The gaming world is eager to get their hands on Nintendo’s next hardware, but it seems plans regarding the Switch 2 have been shifting behind the scenes. We recently heard rumors from numerous reliable sources that while the Switch 2 was originally slated for a late-2024 release, it has now slipped to Q1 2025, and it seems that may have a knock-on effect on how and when Nintendo reveals the hardware.
Microsoft has revealed the titles they’ll be adding to Xbox Game Pass on PC and consoles in late February and very early March, and it’s a varied lineup. Madden NFL 24 released on Game Pass earlier this month, but now it can be played via the cloud. Players can also look forward to Bandai Namco RPG Tales of Arise, Warhammer 40K: Bolt Gun, and more. Of course, if you have kids, your Xbox will likely be monopolized by them playing Bluey: The Video Game.
