Almost one year after being taken from storefronts, MultiVersus is finally coming back in just a couple of months, along with a bunch of new improvements such as rollback netcode, a new engine, and potentially a new character or two. Director Tony Huynh explained in developer Player First's announcement video that the team has been working on making improvements based on feedback, and one of the community's biggest issues with the beta has been addressed as a result.
During the MultiVersus open beta, you could buy a variety of different cosmetics for each character, all of which cost a healthy heaping of Gleamium, the game's virtual currency that you could only obtain via real-life purchases. Given that some emotes, voice packs, and much more were being sold for very low amounts, and the high price of skins, fans complained pretty heavily about there being no ways to earn Gleamium in the game itself.
Thankfully, that's now about to change, as a recent update to the FAQ page on the official MultiVersus website has explained that Gleamium can now "be earned in-game", which is a very welcome addition for people that felt forced into buying it with real money. Unfortunately, it doesn't tell players how they'll be able to earn Gleamium, but we'll likely be able to earn it via either a paid battle pass or weekly challenges, as that's pretty standard in most games with this kind of monetization.
On top of that, it was also revealed that cosmetic items won't be locked to battle passes either, and will appear in the game's store following the expiration of the pass at a later date. That's another bit of great news, especially if you've ever had the experience of having to buy a full battle pass just for a singular cosmetic for your favorite character.
All of these are very positive changes to the game's monetization, something that was criticized heavily during the open beta, but today's release date announcement still wasn't enough to satisfy some of the more skeptical in the fanbase. No character announcement and the reveal of a release date that's still a couple of months away took the wind out of some sails, but we'll likely get plenty more news about the game between now and May 5 when the game finally re-launches.
